Product Description
These really fit all legs, slender to ultra-curvy! **Knit to fit instructions ** for any size/gauge, -OR- use my suggested gauge for standard S/M/L sizing. Make them shorter to scrunch under jeans – long ones can pull over your knees.
As a dancer, I wear legwarmers frequently—even when I am not dancing. Wear these and forget the cold, whether at home, walking a dog or waiting for a bus.
Many designers do not test their legwarmer patterns as I have. These have been tested by me for years. I also had a team of curvy-legged women test my knit-to-fit instructions, for those who may have found other designs unwearable.
Construction: In the round on 4 double-pointed needles (3 holding, 1 working). Seams don’t hold their own when legwarmers fit properly!
Gauge: (For my specified stitch counts) 18 st / 4 inches stranded stockinette in the round. If necessary, change needle size to adjust; -OR- (knit-to-fit) working with your own gauge, with DK- to Ara
Road-Tested Legwarmers by ColorJoy by LynnH
What Is Being Made
Road-Tested Legwarmers are versatile knitted leg coverings designed to fit a wide range of body types and leg shapes, from slender to ultra-curvy proportions. These legwarmers can be worn in multiple ways: scrunched under jeans for a shorter style, or pulled up over the knees of fitted clothing for extended coverage. Suitable for dancers, casual wear at home, dog walking, or waiting outdoors in cold weather, these legwarmers combine functionality with adaptable sizing.
Design Philosophy and Testing
Created by designer Lynn D.T. Hershberger of ColorJoy, these legwarmers have been extensively road-tested over years of personal use as a dancer. The pattern includes specialized knit-to-fit instructions (labeled A, B, C) developed with input from a team of curvy-legged women testers, addressing fit challenges that other legwarmer designs may not accommodate. This inclusive approach ensures wearability across diverse body types.
Construction Technique
The legwarmers are constructed in the round using 4 double-pointed needles, with 3 needles holding stitches and 1 needle working. This circular knitting method creates seamless legwarmers, which is essential for proper fit—traditional seams do not hold adequately when legwarmers are fitted correctly to the leg.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The primary stitch pattern is stranded stockinette in the round, a technique that combines stockinette stitch with stranded colorwork. This creates a durable, elastic fabric suitable for legwear that must stretch and recover around the leg.
Gauge and Yarn Weight
The specified gauge is 18 stitches per 4 inches in stranded stockinette worked in the round. The pattern calls for aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides warmth and structure while remaining flexible enough for legwear. Knitters can adjust needle size to achieve the correct gauge, or alternatively use the knit-to-fit method to customize the pattern to their specific measurements and yarn choice.
Skill Level
Rated as beginner difficulty, these legwarmers are accessible to knitters new to circular needle techniques and stranded colorwork, while remaining satisfying for experienced makers.
