Riveraine Knit Shawl by Keya Kuhn
What Is Being Made
Riveraine is a downloadable knitting pattern for a triangular shawl designed by independent designer Keya Kuhn. This crescent-shaped wrap features generous finished measurements of 55 inches in width and 16 inches in depth at the center back, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a traditional shawlette. The pattern is presented as a PDF download intended for personal use.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Riveraine shawl employs a top-down construction method worked on circular needles, a common approach for crescent and triangular shawl designs. The pattern incorporates strategic increases to shape the fabric and create the characteristic shawl silhouette. A specialized increase technique called KYOK (knit into yarn over, knit) is featured in this design, which functions as a double increase method. This technique involves knitting into the yarn over, wrapping the right-hand needle with yarn, and knitting into the same stitch again, resulting in four stitches being increased on the right side of the fabric. This creates decorative stitch definition while building the shawl's width.
The pattern allows for customization of finished size by adjusting the body stitch count in increments of 24 stitches, enabling knitters to create larger or smaller versions of the shawl based on personal preference.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch as the primary fabric structure
- Yarn overs for decorative increases and lace elements
- KYOK (knit into yarn over, knit) double increase technique
Yarn and Needles
Riveraine is designed to be worked with Cedar Hill Farm Company Rhapsody, a luxury blend yarn containing 15% yak, 20% silk, and 65% superwash merino wool. This yarn weight is classified as 3-ply to 4-ply, providing a delicate yet durable fiber composition. The pattern requires only 1 skein of yarn, which provides 438 yards per 100 grams. The sample shown was knitted in the Oh L'Amour colorway.
Needles required include a US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needle measuring 32 inches in length. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends and finishing.
Gauge and Difficulty
The pattern calls for a gauge of 19 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in garter stitch when blocked. This is a beginner-level pattern, making it accessible to knitters new to shawl construction. The straightforward garter stitch base combined with the specialized but learnable KYOK increase technique creates an ideal project for developing fundamental shawl-knitting skills.
