Product Description
Rigel is the brightest star in the constellation of Orion. The star looks blue-white to the naked eye. Knit from the top down, this cowl is soft and a fun way to use special buttons. The stitch pattern is my Colorway Accented Stockinette. Similar to the approach used for the Rigel Mitts, this pattern spotlights small bursts of color, making it ideal for colorways with a dominant color accented by a mini rainbow or speckles.
Rigel Cowl by Evin Bail O'Keeffe
What is Being Made
The Rigel Cowl is a knitted neck accessory inspired by Rigel, the brightest star in the constellation of Orion, which appears blue-white to the naked eye. This top-down cowl is designed to showcase special buttons and features a distinctive stitch pattern that highlights small bursts of color against a dominant yarn colorway. The finished cowl measures 18.5cm in length, 26.5cm in width, and has a circumference of 52cm, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various necklines.
Techniques and Approach
The Rigel Cowl employs a top-down construction method, which allows knitters to try on the piece as they work and adjust the fit as needed. The design utilizes the Colorway Accented Stockinette stitch pattern, a technique developed by designer Evin Bail O'Keeffe that is specifically engineered to spotlight small bursts of color. This approach is particularly effective for yarns featuring a dominant color accented by mini rainbow hues or speckles, creating visual interest through strategic color placement rather than complex stitch manipulation. The pattern incorporates three buttons as functional and decorative elements, adding both aesthetic appeal and practical closure options to the finished cowl.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used in the Rigel Cowl is the Colorway Accented Stockinette pattern, which is worked in the round. This stitch pattern is knit in rounds, allowing for seamless construction and consistent texture throughout the cowl. The stockinette base provides a smooth, refined fabric that serves as the perfect canvas for the color accents integrated into the pattern.
