R for the ribbons, she ties round her head
One of my favorite childhood books was “A is for Annabelle” by Tasha Tudor. As my mom would read the simple alphabet book over and over, I remember wishing that my grandmother had such an elegant doll with all her fascinating accessories.
This sock pattern is was designed in reference to the part of the book which talks about the ribbons for the doll’s hair. Ribbons She Ties is a toe-up sock with a heel flap and gusset. The side of the sock is adorned with a simple cable pattern that resembles a twisted ribbon. Three bows are knit into the cable pattern near the cuff of the sock. When designing this pattern, I was first inspired by hair ribbons. As I took more inspiration from the illustrations throughout the book, I also became inspired by the fashion of the mid 1800’s. As a result, these socks also have some inspiration from corsets and beautifully detailed Victorian gowns.
Ribbons She Ties Socks by Spivay Song Knits
Project Overview
Ribbons She Ties is a beginner-friendly knitted sock pattern designed by Ann Luckmann of Spivay Song Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern draws inspiration from Tasha Tudor's classic children's book "A is for Annabelle," specifically referencing the elegant ribbons featured in the story. The design combines nostalgic literary inspiration with Victorian-era fashion elements, creating a charming and wearable accessory that celebrates both childhood memories and historical elegance.
Construction Method
This sock pattern uses a toe-up construction method, meaning knitters begin at the toe and work toward the cuff. The pattern incorporates a traditional heel flap and gusset, which are essential structural elements that provide durability and a comfortable fit around the heel area. This construction approach is popular among sock knitters because it allows for easy adjustments to sock length and provides excellent heel shaping.
Stitch Techniques and Design Details
The defining visual feature of Ribbons She Ties is the decorative cable pattern that runs along the side of the sock. This cable design is intentionally simple and resembles a twisted ribbon, directly referencing the pattern's literary inspiration. The cable pattern is further embellished with three decorative bows that are knit directly into the cable near the cuff of the sock, adding an extra touch of elegance and visual interest to the finished garment.
The design aesthetic draws from multiple sources of inspiration: the hair ribbons mentioned in "A is for Annabelle," the fashion silhouettes of mid-1800s corsetry, and the intricate detailing found in Victorian gowns. These influences combine to create socks with both literary charm and historical sophistication.
Yarn and Materials
Ribbons She Ties is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which is a standard weight for sock knitting that creates a fabric with good drape and durability. The 4-ply weight allows for detailed stitch definition, making the cable and bow elements clearly visible in the finished socks. Knitters will need appropriate needles for their chosen 4-ply yarn, typically in smaller gauges suitable for sock construction.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an accessible project for knitters who are new to sock construction. While the pattern includes cable stitches and shaping techniques like heel flaps and gussets, the overall complexity is manageable for those with basic knitting knowledge and a willingness to learn fundamental sock-making methods.
