Product Description

A sweet lady wrote to me, “I am an art teacher. I have purchased a lot of your dishcloth patterns but the Rib And Welt dishcloth pattern is my favorite. I love the visual and tactile surface characteristics and appearance of this finished dishcloth the best.”

The Rib and Welt dishcloth will look the same on both sides; who doesn’t love that? I know I do! And once again…I have included the pattern repeat for those wishing to adjust the size of their dishcloth, or design something fabulous with the stitch pattern.

Rib and Welt Kitchen Dishcloth by Joan Laws

What Is Being Made

The Rib and Welt Kitchen Dishcloth is a practical, everyday dishcloth designed to measure 8½" x 8½" when finished. This project creates a functional kitchen textile suitable for washing dishes, wiping counters, or general household cleaning. The finished piece combines decorative texture with utility, making it an ideal beginner knitting project that produces a useful item for the home.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting technique. Knitting is a fundamental fiber craft that interlocks loops of yarn using two needles to create fabric. The dishcloth employs a structured approach where stitches are cast on, worked in repeating pattern rows, and then bound off to secure the final edge. The project is classified as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters who are new to the craft and looking to build foundational skills while creating something immediately useful.

Stitches and Pattern Structure

The Rib and Welt Kitchen Dishcloth uses two primary stitches that form the foundation of the design:

  • Knit stitch (K): The basic stitch that creates a smooth, V-shaped texture on the right side of the fabric
  • Purl stitch (P): The reverse of the knit stitch, which creates a bumpy texture and is used strategically throughout the pattern

The pattern is based on a multiple of 8 stitches, meaning the stitch count repeats in groups of eight across each row. This repeating structure creates the distinctive "rib and welt" texture—the rib sections are created by alternating knit and purl stitches in vertical columns, while the welt sections are formed by horizontal bands of knit stitches. The pattern consists of a 16-row repeat that is worked three times total, creating depth and visual interest through the interplay of raised ribs and recessed welts.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Rib and Welt Kitchen Dishcloth is designed to be worked with worsted weight yarn. The pattern calls for Lily/Sugar'n Cream yarn, a 100% cotton fiber that is ideal for dishcloths because cotton is absorbent, durable, and easy to launder. The project requires 1 skein of yarn, which provides 120 yards and weighs 70.9 grams. The recommended colorway is #00084 in Sage Green, though the pattern can be adapted to other colors available in this yarn line.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern specifies US Size 6 (4.0mm) knitting needles, or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the finished dishcloth to measure the intended 8½" x 8½" dimensions. The target gauge for this project is 19 stitches per 4 inches when measured in pattern. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their needle size produces the correct gauge, as variations in tension may require adjusting to larger or smaller needles.

Construction Method

The dishcloth is constructed using a straightforward flat knitting method. Forty stitches are cast on using the chosen needle size. The knitter then works through the 16-row pattern repeat, maintaining the rib and welt stitch pattern while following the specific knit and purl instructions for each row. The pattern is repeated three complete times to build the full fabric. Once the desired length is achieved, all stitches are bound off to secure the top edge. Finally, yarn ends are woven in neatly, and the finished piece is blocked (gently shaped and set with moisture) to even out the fabric and achieve the final measurements.
