Product Description
I was inspired for this capelet by two dominant trends for last winter, turtle-neck and grey to make this capelet, which will keep your neck and shoulders warm in the first chilly days of autumn. Since brioche stitch is voluminous by itself, I chose a fine yarn in alpaca and merino wool, which will not add bulkiness to your knit, but will keep you warm and cosy. The capelet was knit with Filatura di Crosa Alpaca yarn, but you can substitute it with another 4ply yarn, like Berroco Cosma, UK Alpaca Baby, or Drops Alpaca. Filatura di Crosa Alpaca has 200m/50gr. and gives 22sts x 29r in 10cm. The capelet is worked in one piece circular, and from down to top and accentuated decreases give the shoulder shaping. It is reversible and can be worn from both sides.
Reversible Cabled Capelet by Evelyn Siatra
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a reversible capelet designed to keep your neck and shoulders warm during the transitional seasons of autumn and early winter. The capelet features a finished neck edge circumference of 40cm (15.9 inches) and widens to approximately 51cm at the lower edge, making it a versatile layering piece that works over both casual and dressed-up outfits. The reversible construction means both sides of the finished garment are visually appealing and wearable.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The capelet is constructed using brioche rib stitch as its primary stitch pattern. Brioche rib is a specialized knitting technique that creates a distinctly voluminous, textured fabric with excellent elasticity and a luxurious appearance. This stitch involves slipping stitches and working yarn overs in a specific sequence to build the characteristic lifted, dimensional look that brioche knitting is known for. The reversible nature of this capelet means the brioche rib pattern is intentionally designed to look equally attractive on both the front and back of the finished piece.
Because brioche rib naturally produces a thick, textured fabric, the designer chose to work with fine-weight yarn to prevent the finished garment from becoming overly bulky or heavy around the shoulders and neck area.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for alpaca and merino wool blend yarn in a fine weight. This fiber combination was specifically selected to provide warmth and coziness without adding excessive bulk to the brioche-stitched fabric. Alpaca contributes softness and insulating properties, while merino wool adds durability and temperature-regulating qualities. This yarn choice ensures the finished capelet will be comfortable against the skin while maintaining its shape and drape.
Knitting needles appropriate for fine-weight yarn are required, though specific needle size recommendations should be verified in the complete pattern document.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle more specialized techniques. The brioche rib stitch requires attention to detail and understanding of yarn overs and slip stitches, but the repetitive nature of the stitch pattern makes it manageable for experienced crafters willing to learn this elegant technique.
Design Inspiration
The capelet was inspired by two dominant fashion trends: the popularity of turtleneck styling and the versatility of grey as a neutral color. This combination makes the reversible cabled capelet a practical accessory that coordinates easily with existing wardrobes while providing functional warmth during cooler weather.
