Product Description

Reginald the red panda lives in the Himalayas, but he dreams of travelling the whole world one day. Wherever he goes, he always brings his satchel to keep any treasures he finds.

This pattern is written using US terminology but is easy to understand for those who use UK terms as the only different stitch is sc (dc in English terms). Reginald takes about 8 hours to make and measures 22cm tall when standing (excluding ears). It is fine to sell small numbers of finished items made from this pattern but please credit me (Woolly Wilderness) as the designer.

Reginald the Red Panda Amigurumi Pattern by Woolly Wilderness

Project Overview

Reginald the Red Panda is an intermediate-level crochet amigurumi pattern designed by Woolly Wilderness. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a charming stuffed red panda toy that measures 13.5cm in height when sitting (excluding ears) and extends to 22cm when standing. The finished project requires approximately 8 hours of crafting time, making it an engaging weekend project for intermediate crocheters.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a three-dimensional amigurumi red panda character named Reginald. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small, stuffed yarn toys and decorative objects. The finished toy features realistic proportions with a distinct head, body, limbs, and characteristic red panda ears, creating a huggable plush companion suitable for display or gifting.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques essential for creating stuffed toys. These techniques include:

  • Working in continuous rounds to build three-dimensional forms
  • Strategic increases and decreases to shape body parts and create natural contours
  • Seamless assembly of individual components (head, body, limbs, ears) into a cohesive finished toy
  • Stuffing techniques to achieve proper structure and dimension
  • Color changes to create the distinctive red panda markings and features

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes basic crochet stitches that form the foundation of amigurumi work:

  • Single crochet (sc) - the primary stitch used throughout the pattern for building dense, sturdy fabric suitable for stuffed toys
  • Increases (inc) - executed as 2 single crochets in one stitch to expand fabric sections and create rounded shapes
  • Decreases (dec) - used to reduce stitches and shape body parts, creating definition and proper proportions

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern requires DK weight yarn in multiple colors to achieve Reginald's authentic red panda appearance. The total yarn yardage needed is approximately 151 meters, distributed across five distinct colors:

  • Rust yarn - 100m (primary color for the body and main features)
  • Black yarn - 25m (for facial features and markings)
  • White yarn - 15m (for eye highlights and belly details)
  • Mustard yarn - 8m (for accent details)
  • Forest green yarn - 3m (for finishing touches)

Tools and Gauge Information

The pattern calls for a 3.00mm crochet hook paired with DK weight yarn. The designer worked to a gauge of 1.5 inches, which directly impacts the final dimensions of the finished toy. Using a different hook size, yarn weight, or gauge will result in a red panda of different proportions, allowing crafters to customize Reginald's size according to their preferences. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished measurements and structural integrity of the amigurumi.

Skill Level and Suitability

Classified as an intermediate project, Reginald the Red Panda pattern is best suited for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable with fundamental amigurumi techniques. The pattern's intermediate difficulty reflects the need to manage multiple color changes, execute precise shaping through increases and decreases, and successfully assemble multiple components into a cohesive finished toy.

While the pattern itself cannot be shared, sold, or redistributed, crafters are permitted to create and sell finished Reginald toys in small quantities. Sharing photos of completed projects on social media is encouraged, provided proper credit is given to Woolly Wilderness as the original designer.
