Product Description
This shawlette is triangular and knit from the top down, using a single skein of sock yarn.
The diamond patterns start off simply and "refract" towards the edging, becoming a little bit more challenging, but it is still easily read as it is being created.
The lace is knit on the right side only.
It should be noted that some testers ran out of yarn, so be very sure of your gauge, if you are loose knitter, I recommend dropping a needle size.
One knitter added an extra repeat of Chart B to get a larger shawl, which used 484 yards of sock yarn.

What is Being Made
The Refraction Shawlette is an advanced knitting project that creates a generous shoulder wrap with a distinctive geometric aesthetic. This shawlette begins at the centre top and expands outward, developing from a structured diamond pattern into increasingly lacy diamond motifs. The finished piece features a shape slightly more generous than a traditional triangle, allowing it to drape gently and hug the shoulders comfortably. The design is suitable for experienced knitters seeking a pattern with visual interest and elegant construction.
Pattern Structure and Design
The shawlette employs a top-down construction method, starting from the centre top and working outward. The pattern features repeating diamond sequences that are easily understood and memorable, allowing the piece to grow quickly despite its advanced difficulty rating. As the shawlette expands, the initial structured diamonds gradually refract and transform into more open, lacy diamond patterns, creating visual movement and depth throughout the finished garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
This advanced pattern incorporates fundamental shawl construction techniques combined with decorative stitch manipulation. The design relies on strategic increases and decreases to shape the expanding triangular form while maintaining the geometric diamond motifs. The use of yarn overs creates the lacy elements that develop as the pattern progresses, demonstrating how tension and stitch placement can transform a simple diamond into increasingly intricate lacework.

Materials and Specifications
The Refraction Shawlette is designed to work with sport-weight or 4ply yarn. The pattern provides specific yarn recommendations including Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply in Purple (100g/365m) and Countess Ablaze Lord of Silk in Coral (100g/400m). However, any yarn of similar weight and meterage will produce successful results. Knitting needles should be 3.5mm or sized to achieve the specified gauge of 24 stitches per 10cm (4 inches). While gauge is typically less critical for shawl patterns, achieving the recommended gauge ensures the shawlette will be appropriately sized; knitting at a larger gauge may require a second skein of yarn to complete the project.
Yarn Weight Considerations
The sport-weight or 4ply yarn category provides an ideal balance for this design, offering sufficient structure to define the diamond patterns while allowing enough drape to create the desired lacy effects. The approximately 365–400 metres of yarn specified provides ample yardage for the generous shawlette dimensions while remaining manageable for a top-down construction method.
