Product Description

This pattern tells you how to crochet a simple but effective cover for your recorder. It's worked back and forth in stripes, then simply seamed, and ties added.

The directions are for a descant recorder size, using DK weight yarn and a 4mm hook, though notes are included on how to adapt the pattern for different sizes and for different yarns.

You'll need around 115 yds (105m) of DK weight yarn. I used Biggan Design Merino First Cross 8 ply, and used the equivalent of one skein.

It's written in UK terms although a US equivalent chart is given.

Recorder Cover Case by Rainbow Knits

What is Being Made

The Recorder Cover Case is a protective crocheted case designed to hold a recorder instrument while safeguarding it from impacts and drops. This cute and functional accessory is ideal for school-aged children and can be customized in any color or yarn choice, including school colors. The case features decorative bobbles that serve both aesthetic and protective purposes.

Construction Method

The recorder cover is constructed by crocheting back and forth in rows to create 6 stripes. Once all stripe sections are completed, the seams are sewn together using a basic sewing stitch of your choice. The finishing touches involve adding either crocheted chains at the corners or sewn-on ribbons for a personalized touch.

Crochet Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Double Crochet (dc) – the primary stitch for building the main fabric of the cover
  • Treble Crochet (tr) – used to create the protective bobbles
  • Single Crochet (sc) – used for sewing seams together

Bobble Technique

The pattern features a bobble-making technique that adds both protection and visual interest. To create a bobble, you work 5 treble crochet stitches into the next chain without casting off the final loop of each treble. All 5 loops remain on the hook simultaneously. Then yarn over and pull through all 6 loops at once to complete the bobble. This creates a raised, dimensional element that helps cushion the recorder from bumps and drops.

Materials and Specifications

This project uses DK weight yarn in your choice of colors. The pattern accommodates various color combinations, allowing crafters to match school colors or personal preferences. A crochet hook appropriate for DK yarn is required, along with basic sewing supplies for assembling the seams and optional ribbons for decoration.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern requires familiarity with fundamental crochet stitches and techniques. Crafters should be comfortable working with chain, double crochet, and treble crochet stitches before beginning. The bobble technique adds a slight challenge but is clearly explained in the pattern instructions.
