Product Description
The rich, dark bodies of these socks were inspired by some of my favourite ales. The simple cables resemble droplets of ale settling in a glass and create a snug but stretchy fit.

Real Ale Socks by Susan Hanlon
What Is Being Made
Real Ale Socks are a pair of knitted socks inspired by the rich, dark bodies of favorite ales. The design features a simple cable pattern that resembles droplets of ale settling in a glass, creating both visual interest and a snug yet stretchy fit. The socks are available in four sizes: S, M, L, and XL, with finished foot circumferences ranging from 18cm to 25cm (7 to 10 inches) and foot lengths from 23cm to 29cm (9 to 11.5 inches).
Techniques Used
These socks are knitted in the round from the cuff down, a classic sock construction method that creates seamless, tubular fabric. The pattern includes both a written cable pattern and a chart to guide knitters through the design. The cable pattern is worked throughout the sock body, and the gauge for the cable pattern is noted as approximate and subject to slight stretching during wear.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure combines stockinette stitch for the sock body with cable stitches that form the decorative droplet motif. The stockinette stitch gauge is 36 stitches × 48 rounds over 10cm (4 inches) in the round, while the cable pattern gauge is 48 stitches × 48 rounds over 10cm (4 inches) when lightly stretched. Both gauges are measured in the round, which is essential for achieving proper fit in this sock design.
Materials and Yarn
Real Ale Socks are designed to be knitted with fingering weight yarn, also known as 4-ply weight. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size (S) requires 300m/330yds, while the largest size (XL) requires 580m/630yds. The socks shown in the pattern were knitted using Jawoll Solid Superwash (100% superwash wool) in colorway 83.0168, requiring 1.5 skeins for the medium size.
Tools and Notions
- 2.75mm (US 2) double-pointed or circular needles
- Cable needle for working cable stitches
- 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with working in the round, reading both written instructions and charts, and executing cable stitches before attempting this project. The combination of in-the-round construction and cable work makes this suitable for knitters with some prior sock-knitting experience.
