This Rainy Day Hat crochet pattern was created during Hurricane Matthew. A great distraction to the howling wind, that sounded like a never-ending train, and torrential rain is to crochet.
This is an easy pattern with an easy to remember stitch pattern to create texture, and a quick project! And what pairs better with a hat than a poncho! Check out the Hooded Poncho, made with the same stitch pattern, to elevate your style during the fall and winter.
Although the weather is warming in the northern hemisphere, this hat can be worn year-round if you don’t use a yarn with a large percentage of wool. It’s loose enough to hide even the longest hair on a bad hair day.
Notes:
This hat is constructed in the round from the bottom up.
Due to the stitch pattern, it is helpful to use a row counter or some means of tracking rows to ensure correct size.

What Is Being Made
The Rainy Day Hat is a crochet hat designed for advanced beginners seeking a practical, textured accessory. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished hat constructed in the round from the bottom up, combining ribbed detailing with a textured body for a polished, wearable design.
Construction Method
This hat is worked in the round using a bottom-up construction technique. The pattern begins with a foundation row and builds upward, requiring careful tracking of rows to ensure proper sizing and stitch placement. Using a row counter or similar tracking method is recommended to maintain accuracy throughout the pattern.
Stitches Used
The Rainy Day Hat employs several fundamental crochet stitches to create its distinctive appearance:
- Foundation Double Crochet (fdc): Used to establish the initial 42-stitch base loop
- Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Creates vertical texture in the ribbing section
- Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc): Works in alternation with fpdc to form the ribbed pattern
- Single Crochet (sc): Forms the main body texture in combination with double crochet
- Double Crochet (dc): Alternates with single crochet to create the hat's primary stitch pattern
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): Used as a turning chain in the ribbing section
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Joins rounds and secures stitches throughout
Pattern Structure
The hat is divided into two distinct sections. Rows 1-3 create a ribbed cuff using alternating front and back post double crochets, establishing a fitted base. Rows 4-20 form the main hat body using an alternating single crochet and double crochet pattern worked continuously in the round, building height and shape.
Materials Required
This pattern calls for super chunky weight yarn, specifically Loop & Threads Woolike Chunky (85% Acrylic, 15% Nylon blend). The yarn is available in 4.41 ounce (125 gram) balls, each containing 94 yards (86 meters). The pattern requires 2 balls or 146 yards total to complete the hat. A crochet hook appropriate for super chunky yarn weight is needed, though the specific hook size is referenced in the full pattern instructions.
Skill Level
Rated as advanced beginner, this pattern is accessible to crafters with foundational crochet knowledge who are ready to work with post stitches and manage in-the-round construction. The use of post stitches in the ribbing section adds textural interest while building technique skills.
