What is Being Made

The Rainbow Beanie is a seamless, in-the-round knit hat designed for babies and children in sizes ranging from 0-6 months through child size. This beginner-friendly beanie features a distinctive rainbow embroidery detail on the centre front, making it a charming and colorful accessory for young wearers.

Construction and Techniques

This beanie is knit seamlessly in the round from the bottom up, which creates a clean, tubular construction without side seams. The pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design:

  • Twisted Rib Stitch: The fold-up rim is worked in twisted rib stitch, which creates neat, defined rib stitches that provide structure and elasticity to the hat's opening
  • Stockinette Stitch: The main body of the beanie is knit in plain stockinette stitch, creating a smooth, classic fabric
  • Crown Shaping: The crown is shaped to a point through strategic decreases
  • Kitchener Stitch: The crown stitches are grafted together using Kitchener Stitch, also known as weaving, which creates an invisible seam and professional finish at the top
  • Chain Stitch Embroidery: A rainbow is embroidered to the centre front using chain stitch, adding the decorative finishing touch

Stitches Used

The Rainbow Beanie utilizes fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginner knitters:

  • Twisted rib stitch for the fold-up rim
  • Stockinette stitch for the body
  • Decreases for crown shaping
  • Kitchener Stitch for grafting the crown
  • Chain stitch for embroidery embellishment

Materials

Yarn: The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, specifically The Yarn Collective Hudson Worsted Extra Fine Merino & Yak, which is composed of 85% wool and 15% yak fiber. Yardage requirements are 50g (55g, 60g, 65g) depending on size, with approximately 180 meters per 100g skein. Additionally, a very small quantity of 4 ply weight yarn in three complementary colors is required for the rainbow embroidery, approximately 30 inches (76cm) per color.

Needles: The pattern requires two sizes of needles suitable for working in the round: 4mm needles (UK size 8, US size 6) and 4.5mm needles (UK size 7, US size 7). Circular needles or double-pointed needles are appropriate for this seamless, in-the-round construction.

Tension: The pattern is worked to a tension of 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch using 4.5mm needles.

Sizing

The Rainbow Beanie is available in four size options: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, toddler, and child, making it versatile for various ages and stages of early childhood.
