Product Description
Introducing my Radishes knitting pattern. Knitted veggies are super toys to encourage little ones to eat veg and greens, or you can use them as decorative items in your home. My veggies are worked flat, but most pieces could easily be converted to knitting in the round if that is your preference. You will also need to cast on and off, knit, purl, work increases and decreases, and sew seams.
Radishes Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
The Radishes pattern is a beginner-friendly knitting project designed to create small decorative toy radishes. Each finished radish measures 10cm tall including the leaf detail. This project is ideal for crafters new to toy making, as it uses fundamental knitting techniques to construct a three-dimensional vegetable-themed soft toy.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project that employs essential toy construction methods. The pattern utilizes basic shaping techniques to transform flat knitted pieces into a dimensional form. Key techniques include increases to expand the fabric for the radish body and decreases to taper and shape the piece. The toy is constructed by knitting individual sections that are then seamed together using a tapestry needle, a standard method for assembling knitted toys.
Stitches Used
The Radishes pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginners:
- Knit (k) – the basic stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Knit into the front and back (kfb) – an increase stitch that creates two stitches from one, used to expand the radish body
- Make 1 (M1) – an additional increase technique for shaping
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch that combines two stitches into one, used to taper and shape the radish form
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires DK weight yarn (also called double knitting or light worsted weight), specifically acrylic yarn from Sirdar or Hayfield Bonus DK lines. Three colors are needed in small quantities of less than 20g each: Green in the shade "Grass" for the radish leaf, Pink in the shade "Orchid Pink" for the radish body, and White for accents or details.
Essential tools include a pair of straight 2.75mm (US 2) knitting needles with a minimum length of 20cm, a tapestry needle for seaming the knitted pieces together, and toy filling material (a few handfuls) to stuff the completed radish and give it dimension and shape.
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 6 stitches by 8 rows per 2.5cm square, which is standard for DK weight yarn. Achieving the correct gauge ensures the finished radish will be the intended size and have the proper fabric density for holding its shape when stuffed.
