In comparison with several free patterns I down loaded, this did not compare favourably. Not a lot wrong but I expected to see a difference in for example instructions and finish.

This is a lovely textured hat that can be created in a beanie or a slouchy style. It is suitable for both males and females. You can make as many different coloured stripes as you want which makes it ideal for using up those scraps of yarn you insist on keeping in your stash!
The pattern is written for dk/8ply yarn but in the pattern there are instructions that enable you to create the hat using any weight yarn you like.
This pattern is available in both US and UK/Aus terminology and it has been tested thoroughly by the wonderful testers in the Free Pattern Testers group.
The gauge for this hat is: 3 pattern repeats (diamond shapes) over 10cm with Dk/8ply yarn and a 4.5mm/G hook.

What is Being Made
The Radella Hat is a versatile crochet beanie or slouchy hat design available in multiple sizes to fit toddlers through adults. This downloadable crochet pattern offers flexibility in construction, allowing makers to choose between a fitted beanie style or a more relaxed slouchy silhouette. The hat features a distinctive diamond pattern repeat that creates visual texture and interest throughout the design.
Size Range and Fit
The Radella Hat pattern includes six size options to accommodate different head circumferences:
- Toddler: 45.5 – 50.5cm (18 – 20 inches)
- Child: 48 – 52cm (19 – 20.5 inches)
- Teen/Small: 53 – 56cm (20.5 – 22 inches)
- Medium: 56 – 58cm (21 – 23.5 inches)
- Large: 58 – 61cm (22 – 24.5 inches)
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental crochet techniques to create its structured yet flexible design. The pattern uses UK and Australian crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with these conventions.
Key stitches incorporated in the Radella Hat include:
- Chain stitch (ch): Used for foundation and pattern construction
- Double crochet (dc): A fundamental stitch providing structure and density
- Treble (tr): Creates lighter, more open sections within the pattern
- Front post treble (fptr): Used in the ribbed stitch sections, creating vertical texture and elasticity
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and seamless transitions
The hat is constructed using repeating diamond-shaped pattern motifs that form the visual foundation of the design. The pattern is worked in rounds, with crocheters instructed to work to a specific length rather than counting rows, allowing for customization and personal preference in the final fit and slouch.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Radella Hat is designed for DK weight yarn (also known as 8ply yarn), a versatile medium-weight yarn that creates a balanced fabric with good drape and structure. Yarn requirements vary by size:
- Toddler size: 150 meters / 165 yards
- Child through Medium sizes: 175–225 meters of yarn
- Large size: 250 meters / 275 yards
For the two-colour variation of the Radella Hat, approximately 125 meters of each colour is needed, allowing for creative colorwork options and personalization.
Essential tools include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing the garment.
Crochet Hooks and Gauge
The pattern accommodates different hook sizes to achieve proper tension and fit. Crocheters should use one of the following hook combinations:
- 5mm/H hook paired with a 4.5mm/G hook
- 6mm/J hook paired with a 4.5mm/G hook
The choice of hook size depends on individual tension and the desired final fabric characteristics. Correct gauge is essential for a successful finished hat.
Tension/gauge is measured as 3 pattern repeats (diamond shapes) over 10cm when working the beanie or slouchy version with DK/8ply yarn and a 4.5mm/G hook. Alternatively, crocheters can measure 13 stitches using the front post treble (rib stitch) over 10cm with a 4.5mm/G hook using UK/Australian terminology. Row gauge is not critical for this project, as length is worked to fit rather than to a specific row count.
