Product Description
I used amigurumi style crochet to create this rabbit character to store some of my yarn. Could also be used to store other little items and would make a lovely gift for fellow crafters.
Rabbit Yarn Holder by Angela Keeler
What Is Being Made
The Rabbit Yarn Holder is a small decorative crochet container designed to hold yarn while working on projects. Standing approximately 10cm (4 inches) high, this beginner-friendly design combines functional storage with charming animal-inspired aesthetics. The holder features a rounded, expanding base structure that creates a bowl-like shape suitable for containing yarn balls or skeins during crafting sessions.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The construction begins with a magic ring foundation, allowing for seamless circular shaping. The design utilizes consistent increases throughout the early rounds to establish the expanding base structure. Increases are worked evenly around each round, creating a symmetrical, balanced form. The pattern transitions from double crochet stitches in the lower rounds to half treble stitches in the upper rounds, demonstrating how stitch height changes can affect fabric drape and structure. Working into back loops only (BLO) may be incorporated for textural variation.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch): Used for foundation and construction
- Double Crochet (dc) / Single Crochet (sc): Forms the base of the holder in rounds 1 through 5, creating a tight, structured fabric
- Half Treble (htr) / Half Double Crochet (hdc): Used in rounds 6 through 8 to create a slightly more open, flexible upper section
- Double Crochet Two Together (dc2tog) / Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog): Decreases stitches when needed
- Half Treble Two Together (htr2tog) / Half Double Crochet Two Together (hdc2tog): Decreases in the upper rounds
- Slip Stitch (ss): Joins rounds and secures yarn
Materials and Construction Details
The Rabbit Yarn Holder is worked with DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn suitable for creating defined stitch definition and neat finished edges. The primary color is Hayfield Bonus DK in Primrose (shade 957), which forms the main body of the holder. Cream (shade 812) from the same yarn line provides contrast for details. Small oddments of brown DK yarn are used for finishing touches, likely for facial features or decorative elements.
A 4mm (US size G/6) crochet hook is used throughout, appropriately sized for DK yarn to achieve the specified tension of 19 stitches by 16 rows over 10cm (4 inches). The pattern incorporates 15mm safety eyes for the rabbit design, and toy stuffing may be used to add dimension and structure to certain components. A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in yarn ends and assembling pieces if the design consists of multiple crocheted sections.
Pattern Structure and Progression
The holder is constructed in the round, beginning with 6 stitches in a magic ring and expanding systematically through eight rounds. Each of the first five rounds increases by 6 stitches, growing from 6 stitches to 36 stitches. Rounds 6 through 8 continue the expansion using half treble stitches, reaching a final width of 54 stitches. This gradual, even expansion creates a smooth, bowl-shaped container with stable sides suitable for holding yarn during use. The pattern's straightforward increase sequences make it ideal for crocheters new to the craft, while the finished piece remains functional and visually appealing.
