Product Description
Rabbit has a choice of two different bow ties – one for evening and one to make him look posh and intellectual – though I don't think this works! He's a fun bunny anyway and will keep your teapot hot. You could also use him as a hiding place for Easter eggs!
Simple to make in doubled DK/8 ply yarn of your choice. Uses between 120 and 150 gms of white DK/8 ply depending on the brand of yarn you use, plus about 10 gms of pink.
Errata – Back of ears: Row 38 should read Row 26.
Rabbit Tea Cosy by Rian Anderson
What is Being Made
The Rabbit Tea Cosy is a charming knitted garment designed to insulate and decorate a standard 6–8 cup teapot. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a three-dimensional rabbit-shaped covering that fits teapots with a base diameter of approximately 15 cm and height of 12–15 cm. The finished tea cosy measures 48 cm all around at its widest part and reaches 30 cm in height to the top of the rabbit's ears. The design includes functional openings for the teapot's spout (8–9 cm) and handle (10–12 cm), ensuring the cosy remains practical while adding whimsical character to your tea service. An optional bow-tie embellishment is available in solid or spotted variations.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This project employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The construction uses stocking stitch as the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, classic knit surface. The pattern involves working with doubled yarn on larger needles for the main body sections, which creates a thicker, more insulating fabric while maintaining manageable stitch counts. Seam construction is accomplished through traditional tapestry needle sewing, joining pieces together to form the three-dimensional rabbit shape. The design incorporates toy eyes (20 mm joggle eyes or similar) that are securely attached to create the rabbit's facial features, and dacron toy filling is used to add dimension and structure to specific areas.
Stitches Used
The Rabbit Tea Cosy primarily features stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), the fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows. This stitch produces the smooth, flat surface characteristic of the cosy's main body. The pattern also incorporates basic shaping techniques including increases and decreases to form the rabbit's three-dimensional structure and distinctive ear shapes.

- Needles: One pair of 5.5 mm (US 9) needles for working with doubled yarn on main sections, and one pair of 4 mm (US 6) needles for finer detail work with single-strand yarn
- Additional Notions: Large tapestry needle for sewing seams, one pair of 20 mm joggle toy eyes (or similar), and dacron toy filling for stuffing
Gauge and Tension Requirements
Achieving correct tension is essential for this project's success. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on the needle size and yarn application: 15 stitches and 21 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 5.5 mm needles using doubled 8 ply/DK yarn, and 20 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 4 mm needles using single 8 ply/DK yarn. Knitters are strongly advised to work a tension swatch measuring at least 4 stitches and 4 rows larger than the required tension before beginning the project, measuring the central stitches to ensure accuracy and proper fit of the finished tea cosy.
