Product Description
The hat is knit bottom up in the round on circular or/and double pointed needles. This attractive textural rib stitch pattern is based on the same principles as the brioche knitting, and whether you are familiar or not with brioche knitting, you will find this stitch quite easy to knit. Furthermore, the same as its famous cousin, the 2-colour classic brioche stitch, it can be knit in two colours adding even more dimension and interest to the finished.
The sample is knit in a single colour, but can be knit in a 2-colour stitch pattern, the instructions are provided. Also, for the gathered crown, as shown in a blue hat, knit 6 or 10 rounds shy than in the crown decrease instructions. In this case you may want to add 2-3 pattern repeats to the body section to keep the finished length the same. The hat can be knit in dk or worsted weight yarn; the gauge and yardage are given for each yarn weight.
Quinque Hat by Alla Saenko
What Is Being Made
Quinque is a textural knit hat designed by independent designer Alla Saenko. This design represents a lighter interpretation of the designer's Araucaria hat, created as part of an ongoing exploration of brioche stitch techniques and their creative applications. The hat features an attractive textural rib stitch pattern that draws inspiration from brioche knitting principles, making it an excellent project for knitters seeking to expand their stitch repertoire.
Knitting Techniques and Stitch Construction
The Quinque hat is constructed using a brioche-inspired textural rib stitch pattern. While the design incorporates the fundamental principles of brioche knitting, the stitch itself is engineered to be approachable for knitters at all experience levels, including those new to brioche techniques. The pattern demonstrates that brioche-based stitches need not be intimidating, as this particular construction proves quite manageable to execute.
One of the most distinctive features of this design is its versatility in color application. The textural rib pattern can be worked in a single color for a classic, subtle appearance, or in two colors to create enhanced dimension and visual interest. The two-color brioche approach adds complexity and depth to the finished fabric, similar to the traditional two-color classic brioche stitch. Pattern instructions are provided for both single-color and two-color versions, allowing knitters to choose their preferred aesthetic.
The hat is knit bottom up in the round, beginning at the brim and working toward the crown. This construction method provides excellent control over fit and allows for straightforward adjustments to length.
Needles and Construction Methods
Quinque can be worked using either circular needles or double pointed needles, offering flexibility based on knitter preference and experience level. This adaptability makes the pattern accessible to knitters with varying tool preferences.
Crown Shaping Options
The pattern provides customization options for the crown finish. The standard construction features a specific crown treatment as shown in the sample hat. However, knitters seeking a more gathered crown effect (as demonstrated on a blue hat variation included in the pattern) can modify the construction by working 6 or 10 fewer rounds than the standard instructions specify. When using this gathered crown variation, the pattern recommends adding 2 to 3 additional pattern repeats to the body section to maintain the intended finished length of the hat.
Yarn and Materials
Quinque is designed to work with DK or worsted weight yarn, providing options for different fabric weights and drape characteristics. The choice between these weights allows knitters to customize the final fabric density and warmth level of their finished hat.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced stitch techniques. The brioche-inspired construction and textural rib pattern offer an excellent stepping stone for developing brioche knitting competency without requiring prior expertise in this specialized technique.
