Product Description

This cute puppy is only visible if you stand in the right position to look at him. When you look straight at illusion knitting you only see narrow stripes. The image is revealed when you look from the bottom.

The finished blanket measures about 81 cm x 104 cm (32” x 44”) when made in DK yarn. You can use any yarn you want but the overall size may change.

The pattern includes three different versions of the chart - one on a single page, another split into four sections, and the third for use on hand-held devices.

Our illusion knitting does not use conventional knitting charts and you don’t need to understand any knitting symbols. The design might look difficult but it is nothing more than simple stripes with knit and purl stitches. When you look straight at illusion knitting you only see the narrow stripes.

Puppy Illusion Baby Blanket by Steve Plummer

Project Overview

The Puppy Illusion Baby Blanket is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Steve Plummer and Pat Ashforth from Woolly Thoughts. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a charming baby blanket featuring an illusion knitting technique that reveals a puppy design when viewed from the correct angle. The finished blanket measures approximately 81 cm x 104 cm (32" x 44"), making it an ideal size for a newborn or young child.

Illusion Knitting Technique

This pattern employs illusion knitting, a specialized technique that creates hidden images visible only when the fabric is viewed at a specific angle. The design works by alternating rows of contrasting colors in a carefully planned sequence, allowing the puppy motif to emerge from the overall fabric structure. This technique requires slightly tighter tension than standard knitting to ensure the illusion effect displays clearly while maintaining the softness and suppleness necessary for a baby blanket.

Yarn Requirements

  • Approximately 600 metres (660 yards) of dark DK weight yarn
  • Approximately 500 metres (550 yards) of light DK weight yarn
  • Designer used Stylecraft Special DK in Cream (light color) and Mocha (dark color)
  • Any DK or sport weight yarn can be substituted; thicker yarn will enlarge the blanket, while thinner yarn will reduce its size

Needles and Tension

The pattern recommends using needles one size smaller than typical for DK weight yarn to achieve the tight tension necessary for the illusion effect. The designer used 3.25 mm needles. This intentionally tighter gauge ensures the color-work pattern creates the desired visual illusion while preserving the blanket's essential softness and drape for safe use with infants.

Pattern Charts and Format

The PDF includes three versions of the knitting chart to accommodate different preferences and devices:

  • Single-page chart version for traditional printing
  • Four-section split chart for easier reference during knitting
  • Tablet and phone-optimized version for digital knitting

Each line on the chart represents two rows of knitting, referred to as a ridge. Understanding the chart format before beginning is essential for successful completion of this pattern.

Skill Level and Suitability

Rated as an intermediate project, this blanket is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced techniques. The illusion knitting method adds complexity beyond basic stockinette stitch, making this an excellent project for developing pattern-reading abilities and understanding how color placement creates visual effects in knitted fabric.
