Schachenmayr Egypto Cotton Baby Pullover Knitting Pattern (4857) – Free Downloadable PDF

This free downloadable knitting pattern from Schachenmayr provides instructions for a classic baby pullover worked in Schachenmayr Egypto Cotton, a 4-ply weight cotton yarn. The design is clean, structured, and practical, featuring a simple button shoulder opening that makes dressing and undressing a young baby straightforward. The pattern covers two size ranges — 62/68 and 74/80 — making it suitable for newborns and infants in their first several months of life.

Garment Overview

The finished pullover is a short-sleeved or set-in-sleeve infant jumper worked in separate pieces and seamed together. It features a garter stitch border at the lower edge and a structured body worked in a main stitch pattern. The neckline is shaped on the front piece, and the shoulder overlap is secured with a buttonhole closure, a practical and traditional detail for baby knitwear. The total finished height of the garment is 26 cm for size 62/68 and 30.5 cm for size 74/80.

Pattern Pieces and Construction Details

Back Panel

The back piece is cast on with 69 stitches for size 62/68 or 75 stitches for size 74/80 using the colour Royal. The lower border is worked over 5 rows of garter stitch, with the first row worked as a wrong-side (return) row. The body then continues in the main stitch pattern until the piece measures 24 cm (110 rows) for size 62/68 or 28.5 cm (130 rows) for size 74/80 from the border. At this point, the central 31 stitches are cast off for the back neck, and the remaining outer stitches — 19 stitches per side for size 62/68 or 22 stitches per side for size 74/80 — are continued in garter stitch in Royal for a further 1 cm (4 rows) to form the shoulder underlap tabs, before all stitches are cast off.

Front Panel

The front is worked identically to the back in its lower section, but features a shaped round neckline introduced earlier. After 19.5 cm (90 rows) for size 62/68 or 24 cm (110 rows) for size 74/80 from the border, the central 15 stitches are cast off to begin the neck shaping. Decreases are then worked on both sides every 2nd row: 2 stitches twice, then 1 stitch four times, creating a smooth, rounded neckline. After reaching the same total row count as the back, the outer shoulder stitches are worked in garter stitch in Royal for a further 1 cm (4 rows) to form the shoulder overlap tabs.

A buttonhole is worked into the overlap tab during the second row of garter stitch. The buttonhole is created using a classic knit-two-together, yarn-over, knit-two-together method, positioned after 8 stitches for size 62/68 or 9 stitches for size 74/80. On the following row, the yarn-over is worked as both a regular knit stitch and a twisted knit stitch to reinforce the buttonhole opening. All stitches are then cast off.

Sleeves

The sleeves are cast on with 39 stitches in Royal and begin with 5 rows of garter stitch, again with the first row worked as a wrong-side row. The sleeve body then continues in the main stitch pattern. Full shaping and length details follow the same sizing logic as the body pieces, with instructions given for both size ranges throughout the pattern.

Techniques Used

  • Garter stitch — used for the lower borders, cuffs, and shoulder tab finishes; worked by knitting every row, creating a ridged, non-curling fabric ideal for edges on baby garments
