Prose Cardigan by Alicia Plum

What is Being Made

Prose is a knitted cardigan designed by independent designer Alicia Plum. This garment is described as a subtle yet elegant piece that conveys grace and ease through its refined construction. The cardigan is available in four sizes: XS, S, M, and L, fitting bust measurements of 28-30 inches, 32-34 inches, 36-38 inches, and 40-42 inches respectively.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level cardigan employs the Contiguous method, a construction technique developed by Susie M. Genius that allows for seamless or minimal-seam garment assembly. The pattern incorporates lace stitch work as a design element, with both charted and written instructions provided for the lace pattern. The construction method enables trying on the cardigan while actively working, thanks to the use of a long circular needle.

Shoulder shaping is achieved through strategic increases of 2 stitches on each shoulder seam on both right-side and wrong-side rows, continuing until the shoulder seam reaches 2.5 inches in length. This technique creates proper sleeve cap ease and garment fit.

Stitches Used

  • Lace stitches (charted and written patterns provided)
  • Increases worked on shoulder seams for shaping
  • Stitch markers used to denote pattern sections and construction points

Yarn and Needles

This pattern requires 900, 920, 980, or 1,300 yards of yarn depending on size, in sock to sportweight yarn. The sample shown was knitted using Brooklyn Tweed Loft yarn. The recommended gauge is 6 stitches to the inch on US size 6 (4.0mm) needles.

Required needles and notions include one 40-inch US size 6 (4.0mm) circular needle for ease in trying on during construction, US size 6 (4.0mm) double-pointed needles, and 8 stitch markers, with 2 marked differently for pattern identification. Blocking the gauge swatch is recommended before beginning the project.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes a complete stitch glossary, charted lace pattern with key, and written instructions for the lace pattern, making it accessible to knitters who prefer either charted or written guidance.
