Product Description
This pattern is the fingeringweight version of the Prescott DK cardigan. Worked from the shoulders-down, the set-in sleeves of the Prescott cardigan are created simultaneously with the upper bodice in a technique originally described by Barbara Walker. A photo tutorial is included with the pattern to illustrate the technique. The button plackets are worked along with the bodice, and allow you to place as many or as few buttons wherever you like without having to plan ahead. Shaping to the waist is accomplished along princess “seams” to allow for maximum customization. There is very little hip shaping, however, since the floral lace hem stretches to fit. See “Some Thoughts About Fit” section of the pattern for advice on how to adapt the shaping to your own fit preferences.
Prescott Cardigan by Mary Annarella
Design Overview
The Prescott Cardigan is a knitted cardigan sweater that honors the town of Prescott, Massachusetts, one of four central Massachusetts towns disincorporated to create the Quabbin reservoir. This intermediate-level knitting project is part of Lyrical Knits' Quabbin Series and features a distinctive floral rib pattern inspired by the apple blossoms that characterize the Prescott region's landscape and agricultural heritage.
Construction Technique
The Prescott Cardigan employs a shoulders-down construction method, a popular approach in modern knitting that allows for customizable fit and length adjustments. The set-in sleeves are created simultaneously with the upper bodice using a technique originally described by Barbara Walker, a renowned knitting authority. This simultaneous construction method streamlines the building process and ensures proper sleeve cap shaping integrated with the body piece.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The cardigan features a floral rib pattern as its primary stitch design element. This textured pattern creates visual interest reminiscent of apple blossoms and provides subtle dimensionality to the finished garment. The ribbed construction offers natural elasticity and recovery, making the cardigan comfortable for everyday wear.
Button Plackets and Customization
The button plackets are integrated into the bodice construction, worked simultaneously with the main body piece. This design approach allows knitters to customize the cardigan by placing as many or as few buttons as desired, providing flexibility in the final garment's appearance and closure options.
Yarn and Materials
- Basic sock yarn recommended for an everyday, versatile sweater
- Silk-blend yarn suggested as an alternative for a more luxurious finish
Skill Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable with techniques such as set-in sleeve construction and simultaneous knitting methods.
