Product Description
Introducing my Potatoes knitting pattern. Knitted veggies are super toys to encourage little ones to eat veg and greens, or you can use them as decorative items in your home. My veggies are worked flat, but most pieces could easily be converted to knitting in the round if that is your preference. You will also need to cast on and off, knit, purl, work increases and decreases, and sew a seam.
Potatoes Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a pair of toy potatoes in different sizes. The set includes one large potato measuring 9cm wide and one smaller potato measuring 6cm wide. These are beginner-friendly stuffed toys perfect for children or as decorative pieces.
Craft and Techniques
The Potatoes pattern uses knitting as the primary craft method. This is an ideal beginner project, making it accessible to knitters new to toy construction. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for creating three-dimensional stuffed pieces.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) - the basic stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Knit into the front and back (kfb) - an increase stitch used to shape the potato forms
These essential stitches are combined to build the rounded, organic shapes characteristic of potatoes.
Materials Required
Needles: A pair of straight 2.75mm (US 2) knitting needles with a minimum length of 20cm.
Yarn: DK weight yarn (also called double knitting or light worsted weight), using less than 20g in each colour. The pattern specifies Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK, which is 100% acrylic. Two colours are needed: Brown in the shade "Walnut" and Beige in the shade "Oatmeal".
Additional Notions: A tapestry needle for seaming the pieces together, a few handfuls of toy filling for stuffing, two 9mm toy safety eyes for the large potato, and two 6mm toy safety eyes for the smaller potato.
Tension
The pattern is worked at a tension of 6 stitches and 8 rows per 2.5cm square, which helps ensure the potatoes are the correct finished size.
