What is Being Made

This is a knitted cosy designed to fit a coffee plunger pot (also called a French press). The cosy features a charming post box design with an optional opportunistic dog detail. The finished cosy measures approximately 33 cm all around and 22 cm in height at the centre, making it suitable for a medium-sized plunger with a circumference of 31 cm and height of 22 cm to the top of the knob on the lid. The handle height reaches approximately 14 cm.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques to create its distinctive post box appearance. The pattern utilizes stocking stitch as the primary fabric construction method, which creates a smooth, classic knitted surface ideal for displaying colour work. Cable cast-on is used to begin the project, providing a sturdy foundation edge. The design incorporates colour work using multiple yarn colours to build the post box motif, with red forming the main body, black for details, white for accents, and brown for additional embellishment. Seaming is required to join pieces together using a tapestry needle. The pattern also includes crochet work as an additional technique, utilizing a 3.5 mm crochet hook for specific elements. Button attachment is incorporated as a finishing detail, with a 1.5 cm black button sewn securely using strong sewing cotton and a fine sewing needle.

Stitches Used

Materials and Yarn

This project requires 8 ply yarn (equivalent to DK weight) in multiple colours. Specifically, you will need 50 grams of red 8 ply yarn used doubled for the main body, 20 grams of black 8 ply yarn also used doubled for the post box details, and small amounts of white 8 ply yarn used doubled for highlights and accents. Brown 8 ply yarn is used in single strand for fine detail work. The needle requirements include one pair of 5.5 mm (US 9) needles for the main fabric, one pair of 4 mm (US 6) needles for ribbing or other sections, and a pair of 3.25 mm (US 3) double-pointed needles for smaller circumference areas. A 3.5 mm (US 4) crochet hook is needed for crochet elements. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for seaming, a black button approximately 1.5 cm in diameter, a fine sewing needle with strong sewing cotton for button attachment, a dark-coloured chenille stick for structural support, and a small ball of dacron toy filling for stuffing the optional dog detail.
