Poose Säckchen – Free Crochet Bag Pattern by Schachenmayr Designteam
The Poose Säckchen is a free, beginner-friendly crochet pattern published by the Schachenmayr Designteam and available as a downloadable PDF. The pattern presents three sizes of crocheted pouches or small bags, each worked in a different colorway using Schachenmayr Catania yarn. These charming textile bags make excellent project bags, gift pouches, or everyday accessories, and their structured textured surface gives them a polished, handcrafted look despite being rated as an easy make.
The Three Designs at a Glance
Each of the three bags shares the same construction method and stitch pattern but differs in size and color, making the pattern versatile and scalable for crocheters of all preferences.
Design A – Säckchen in Gelbgrün (Yellow-Green)
The smallest of the three bags measures approximately 17 cm wide and 28 cm tall. It is worked in color 00392 (gelbgrün / yellow-green) and requires 3 × 50 g balls of Schachenmayr Catania. The foundation chain begins with 46 chain stitches, and the body is crocheted to a length of 56 cm in the main stitch pattern before finishing.
Design B – Säckchen in Jade
The medium-sized pouch measures approximately 22 cm wide and 30 cm tall. Worked in color 00253 (jade), it uses 4 × 50 g balls of Catania. The foundation chain consists of 60 chain stitches, and the panel is worked to 60 cm in length before assembly.
Design C – Säckchen in Regatta
The largest version measures approximately 27 cm wide and 34 cm tall. Crocheted in color 00261 (regatta), this size requires 5 × 50 g balls of Catania. It starts with 72 chain stitches and is worked to a length of 68 cm before seaming and finishing.
Yarn and Materials
All three bags are made using Schachenmayr Catania, a popular sport-weight cotton yarn sold in 50 g balls with a running length of approximately 125 metres per 50 g. Catania is a smooth, mercerised cotton yarn well known for its wide colour range, stitch definition, and durability, making it an excellent choice for structured accessories and bags. The pattern notes advise checking the dye lot on each ball band and using only balls from the same colour batch to ensure colour consistency across the finished piece.
Two crochet hook sizes are required:
- 4.0 mm hook – used for the main body of the bag
- 5.0 mm hook – used for joining the side seams with double yarn
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern is built around a textured main stitch pattern (Grundmuster) that incorporates Relief-Stäbchen (relief treble crochets / raised treble crochets) worked from the front. These stitches are created by inserting the hook around the post of the stitch in the previous row rather than through the top loops, which produces a pronounced ribbed or basketweave-like surface texture. This technique is a staple of structured crochet fabric and adds both visual interest and a degree of firmness to the bag walls.
- Luftmaschen (Lm) / Chain stitches – used for the foundation chain
- Feste Maschen (fM) / Single crochet stitches – used in the seaming process
- Relief-Stäbchen von vorn / Front post treble crochets – the primary stitch forming the textured body fabric
- Kettmaschen (Km) / Slip stitches – used to fasten off at the end
