Product Description
This pattern is written for several different weight yarns with a photo tutorial included to help you with the special stitch. It is easily adjustable with the repeat given and there is a basic sizing chart for measurements to aim for as a guide. This design uses one color at a time, making this super easy.
Lots of bonuses are included in this as well - a cowl pattern for each weight, a cupcake style (pattern on the brim) for each weight, and using the combined cupcake and regular beanie versions, you can make a brimless version of this design! So much goodness!
Pomona Beanie by Wanded Knit and Crochet
What is Being Made
The Pomona Beanie is a knitted hat inspired by the character Pomona Sprout from the Harry Potter universe. This beanie is designed as a finished hat measuring approximately 8.5" x 9" when laid flat, making it a classic close-fitting winter accessory suitable for various head sizes depending on yarn weight selection.
Yarn Weight Options and Yardage Requirements
The Pomona Beanie pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, allowing crafters to choose based on their preferred finished fabric density and warmth level:
- Super Bulky Weight (6): Approximately 75-80 yards for the main color, with 14-15 yards needed for each contrast color repeat
- Bulky Weight (5): Approximately 80-95 yards for the main color, with 15-17 yards for each contrast repeat
- Light Bulky/Aran Weight (4+): Approximately 110-130 yards for the main color, with 17-18 yards for each contrast repeat
- Worsted Weight (4): Approximately 130-150 yards for the main color, with 17-18 yards for each contrast repeat
Needles Required
The pattern provides needle size recommendations tailored to each yarn weight option to ensure proper gauge and fabric drape:
- US 13 / 9mm 16" circular needles (for super bulky yarn)
- US 10 / 6mm 16" circular needles (for bulky yarn)
- US 15 / 10mm 16" circular needles and/or double-pointed needles (for light bulky/aran)
- US 11 / 8mm 16" circular needles and/or double-pointed needles (for worsted weight)
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Pomona Beanie employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for an advanced beginner to intermediate skill level. The pattern utilizes contrast color work, incorporating color repeats throughout the design to create visual interest and texture. Crafters will work with circular needles in the round, a standard method for creating seamless hats. The pattern includes color changes at regular intervals, with each contrast repeat requiring a small yardage allocation, suggesting a striped or patterned colorwork design rather than complex intarsia.
Skill Level and Pattern Difficulty
Listed as advanced beginner to intermediate, the Pomona Beanie is accessible to knitters with foundational skills while offering enough complexity to challenge those developing their abilities. The pattern notes emphasize reading through all instructions before beginning, particularly the notes section, indicating important technique clarifications or modifications that crafters should understand upfront.
Design Inspiration
The beanie draws thematic inspiration from Pomona Sprout, the Herbology professor at Hogwarts, known for her expertise in managing magical plants. While the pattern itself focuses on knitting technique and construction, the name connects to this character, potentially influencing color choices or aesthetic preferences for makers familiar with the source material.
