What is Being Made

Polygon is a triangular knitted shawl designed by Verena Cohrs for The Wool Club. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a generous wrap with a 210 cm (82.75 inch) wingspan along the top edge and a maximum depth of 105 cm (41.25 inches), making it a substantial and versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a traditional shawl.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level pattern incorporates several advanced knitting techniques that add visual interest and structural integrity to the finished piece. The design features Brioche knitting, a technique that creates a distinctive textured appearance through yarn overs and knit-through-below stitches, giving the shawl an elegant, dimensional quality. I-Cord is used as an edging or structural element, providing a neat, finished border. The pattern also employs a Provisional Cast-On, which allows stitches to be picked up later for seamless construction or to create reversible edges.

Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout the shawl is Appalachian Garter Stitch, worked flat in rows. This classic stitch pattern is created by knitting all stitches on both the right-side and wrong-side rows, producing a textured, bumpy fabric with excellent drape and versatility. Garter stitch is particularly forgiving for intermediate knitters and provides a stable foundation for the more complex brioche elements.

Yarn and Materials

Polygon is designed to be worked in O-Wool O-Wash Fingering, a fingering-weight yarn composed of 100% machine-washable certified organic Merino wool. This yarn offers 360 metres (394 yards) per 100 grams, providing excellent yardage for the generous shawl dimensions. The pattern requires four color options:

• C1: 340 metres / 372 yards (shown in Pearly Mussel)
• C2: 270 metres / 296 yards (shown in Stone)
• C3: 270 metres / 296 yards (shown in Silver Maple)
• C4: 235 metres / 257 yards (shown in Cattail)

The shawl is worked on 3.75 mm (US 5) needles. The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 36 rows over 10 x 10 centimeters when worked flat in Garter Stitch and measured after blocking, though the pattern notes that gauge is not overly crucial for this particular design.

This is a downloadable PDF pattern, making it immediately accessible for digital devices. The pattern was originally created as part of a MKAL (Mystery Knit-Along), indicating it may have been released in installments to the knitting community.
