Police Call Box Slouch Hat Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
This is a slouch hat inspired by the iconic Police Call Box design, created by Misty Makes Designs. The hat features a relaxed, oversized fit that drapes down the back of the head, making it a comfortable and stylish accessory. The pattern uses a color-blocked construction technique to recreate the distinctive appearance of the Police Call Box, utilizing three separate yarn colors to build the design.
Crochet Techniques Used
The pattern employs several intermediate-level crochet techniques to achieve its structured yet slouchy silhouette. The construction involves working in rounds to build the crown and body of the hat, with careful attention to gauge and stitch placement. Front post triple crochet stitches are used as a special stitch technique, which creates textured, dimensional elements by working around the post of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops. This technique adds visual interest and helps define the Police Call Box aesthetic. The pattern also incorporates back loop only construction in select areas, which creates a ridged texture by working through only the back loop of stitches, adding depth to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Single crochet (sc) – A fundamental stitch used for structure and shaping
- Half double crochet (hdc) – Provides medium height and drape for the slouchy fit
- Front post triple crochet (FPtc) – A specialty stitch that works around the post of previous stitches to create textured, raised details characteristic of the Police Call Box design
- Slip stitch (slst) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between color sections
Materials and Gauge Information
The pattern calls for medium worsted weight yarn in three colors to create the color-blocked Police Call Box design. The designer used Red Heart and Loops and Threads yarn brands in their sample. Three different crochet hook sizes are required depending on the desired finished hat size: size K, J, and I hooks. The pattern provides specific gauge measurements for each hook size to ensure proper fit and drape. With a K hook, the gauge is 9 half double crochet stitches over 3 inches. Using a J hook yields 10 half double crochet stitches over 3 inches, and also produces 10 single crochet stitches over 3 inches. With an I hook, the gauge measures 11 single crochet stitches over 3 inches. Matching gauge is essential for achieving the correct slouch and overall dimensions of the finished hat.
