Product Description
I come from a long line of seafaring people…
Lies.
I grew up by the ocean.
I LOVE the ocean but rarely took a dip in it.
We were pond people.
Seaweed, jellyfish, horseshoe crabs, nurse sharks were all awesome, unless they touched me when I waded in the sea. But when I design, I love to find a spot to put a bit of the ocean in the final product. This hat is an homage to all the colorful life in the sea.
Available to make in 4 sizes in Worsted weight wool. Liner is optional, but makes for great warmth on the high seas. Or in the city too.
Plenty of Fish in the Sea Hat by Idle Hands Knits
What Is Being Made
The Plenty of Fish in the Sea Hat is a colorful knitted hat designed by Lisa McFetridge of Idle Hands Knits. This downloadable knitting pattern celebrates ocean life through vibrant colorwork, featuring an array of sea-inspired motifs. The hat is available in four sizes: Infant, Child, Adult, and Large Adult, making it a versatile project for knitters creating gifts or garments for family members across different age groups.
Design and Concept
Drawing inspiration from coastal living and marine ecosystems, this hat incorporates charted colorwork patterns that evoke the diversity of ocean creatures and seascape elements. The designer's personal connection to the sea—from childhood memories of pond exploration to encounters with seaweed, jellyfish, horseshoe crabs, and nurse sharks—infuses the design with authentic maritime character. The pattern allows knitters to bring a piece of the ocean into their finished garment, whether worn during seaside adventures or city living.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project utilizes charted colorwork as its primary technique. The pattern includes intarsia or stranded colorwork charts that feature the same design elements across all four sizes, with adjustments made to accommodate stitch differences appropriate to each size's proportions. Knitters will work from charts to create the detailed ocean-themed motifs that distinguish this hat from basic solid-colored designs.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Plenty of Fish in the Sea Hat is designed for worsted weight yarn, offering excellent stitch definition for the colorwork elements. The pattern samples were created using Malabrigo Rios, a premium worsted weight option known for its vibrant color palette and smooth finish. The yardage requirements vary by size:
- Main Color (MC): Deep Blue — 120 yards (Infant), 140 yards (Child), 155 yards (Adult), or 160 yards (Large Adult), approximately 110–147 meters depending on size
- Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Medium Blue — 22–28 yards (Infant through Large Adult), approximately 20–26 meters
The pattern includes guidance for yarn substitutions on page 7, allowing knitters to select alternative worsted weight options if preferred. A optional liner is mentioned as an enhancement for added warmth, suitable for both cold-weather seaside conditions and urban winter wear.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is best suited for knitters with experience in basic garment construction and comfort reading charts. The colorwork technique requires familiarity with managing multiple colors within rows, making it an ideal project for those looking to develop or refine their stranded or intarsia knitting skills.
