Product Description
Something about orderly rows of pine needles is very appealing. Somehow, they strike a nice balance between rigid order and lively randomness. Pine needles also translate well into lace knitting, and make for a stately but casual stitch pattern.
Double thick mittens with a pine needle lace stich on the front. The lining is knit separatly from the outside, they are not double knit!
They are knit in the round, starting with cuff of the outside. Once the outside is knit, you pull out the provisional cast on and knit the lining from there. The thumbs are afterthought.
You will need one ball for the outside, and another for the contrasting lining.
The pattern includes line by line instructions as well as charts.
Pines Mittens by Jenise Reid
Project Overview
The Pines Mittens are a thoughtfully designed pair of knitted mittens featuring a distinctive construction method that creates visual interest through strategic stitch placement. These mittens showcase a unique two-layer construction where pine needle motifs create decorative openings that allow a contrasting lining to peek through, adding both aesthetic appeal and functional warmth to the finished garment.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of fitted mittens available in three sizes to accommodate different hand lengths: small (6 inches), medium (7 inches), and large (8 inches). The mittens feature a cuff-to-fingertip construction with an integrated lining that provides extra insulation and durability without creating a bulky double-knit fabric.
Construction Technique
The Pines Mittens employ an innovative two-stage knitting method that differs from traditional double-knit approaches. The construction process begins by knitting the outer mitten from the cuff upward to the fingertip. Once the outer layer is complete, the knitter picks up stitches from the original cast-on edge and knits the lining in the opposite direction, working from the cuff toward the fingertip. After both layers are complete, afterthought thumbs are added by snipping into the fabric and picking up stitches, then the lining is tucked inside the outer layer. This method ensures the lining remains attached only at the wrist, creating a garment that is easier to construct than traditional double-knit mittens while still providing the benefits of a lined mitten.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern incorporates pine needle motifs that create rows of small decorative holes throughout the fabric. These openings are intentionally designed to allow the contrasting lining color to show through, creating visual depth and interest. The specific stitch techniques used to create these pine needle effects add texture and visual complexity to what would otherwise be a straightforward stockinette construction.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Pines Mittens are designed to be knitted with Knit Picks Capretta, a premium yarn blend consisting of 80% Merino Wool, 10% Cashmere, and 10% Nylon. This yarn is classified as 4-ply weight and provides 230 yards per 50-gram ball. The pattern requires two full balls of yarn—one for the outer mitten and one for the lining. The sample shown uses Timber for the outer layer and Harbor for the lining, demonstrating how color contrast enhances the decorative hole pattern.
Tools and Needles
Knitters should use 3.5 mm needles (US size 4) to achieve the correct gauge with the recommended yarn. The pattern accommodates different needle preferences: the designer used a circular needle with the magic loop method for in-the-round knitting, but double-pointed needles (dpns) are equally suitable for this project. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and possibly extra dpns to assist with picking up stitches for the afterthought thumbs.
Difficulty Level
These mittens are rated as an intermediate-level project, making them suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The intermediate classification reflects the two-layer construction method, the management of multiple stitches in the round, and the technique of adding afterthought thumbs, all of which require solid foundational knitting skills.
