Product Description

Fat pink pig to keep the tea warm - don't try to put money in it!

This cosy is a bit unusual as the head comes off to pour the tea! Note: it may not fit a teapot with a very short spout.

Simple to make in doubled DK/8 ply yarn of your choice. Uses between 100 and 120 gms of 8 ply, depending on the brand of yarn you use.

This pattern has instructions for how to make an i-cord.

What is Being Made

The Pig Tea Cosy is a charming knitted cover designed to fit a standard 6-8 cup teapot while keeping tea warm during serving. This whimsical design features a removable pig head that lifts off to allow pouring, making it both functional and decorative. The finished tea cosy measures approximately 48 cm around the widest part and 16 cm in height to the top of the back, with a spout opening of 7-8 cm and handle opening of 11-12 cm, sized to accommodate teapots with a 15 cm diameter base.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its distinctive pig form and functional design. The primary body is worked using the stocking stitch technique on 5.5 mm needles with doubled 8 ply/DK yarn, creating a dense, structured fabric suitable for holding heat. The removable head component is constructed separately, likely using smaller 3.25 mm double-pointed needles for more detailed shaping. The clever engineering of a removable head requires careful increases and decreases to create the pig's facial features and ensure the head sits securely yet lifts away cleanly for pouring access.

Stitches Used

The pattern relies primarily on stocking stitch as the foundation stitch, which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric forming the cosy body. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases to form the pig's contours, head, and snout. The pattern likely incorporates ribbing or other stitch variations for the spout and handle openings to provide structure and prevent stretching in these high-use areas.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

  • Yarn: 8 ply/DK weight yarn in pink (100 grams) for the main body and black (10 grams) for details such as eyes or snout markings
  • Needles: 1 pair of 5.5 mm (US 9) needles for the main body worked with doubled yarn, and 2 x 3.25 mm (US 3) double-pointed needles for the removable head and finer details
  • Notions: Large tapestry needle for seaming and finishing, 1 pair of 15 mm joggle toy eyes for the pig's face, dacron toy filling for stuffing the head to maintain its shape, and a 30 cm long chenille stick (pipe cleaner) for creating poseable ears or snout structure

Gauge and Tension

The pattern specifies a tension of 15 stitches and 21 rows to 10 cm when working stocking stitch on 5.5 mm needles using doubled 8 ply/DK yarn. Achieving correct gauge is essential for this project, as the tea cosy must fit properly over a standard teapot. Knitters are advised to work a tension swatch measuring at least 14 stitches by 14 rows and measure the central 10 cm square. If fewer stitches appear in the 10 cm measurement, smaller needles should be used to prevent the cosy from being too large; conversely, if too many stitches are present, larger needles will be needed.

Design Features

This tea cosy combines practical functionality with playful character design. The removable pig head mechanism allows the cosy to serve its primary purpose of insulating a teapot while adding a decorative, whimsical element to the kitchen. The use of toy eyes and the chenille stick for structural details brings the pig to life, while the careful sizing of openings ensures the cosy fits securely without impeding access to the spout and handle.
