Product Description
A lovely shawlette in four variations… all feature a basket weave patterned body that is simple to learn and quick to knit. It can be shaped either as an asymmetrical right triangle or as a skinnier symmetrical isosceles triangle. Either shape can be edged with a ruffle (worked in short rows as you go) or a crocheted chain edging (added after the body is worked.)
The size of this shawlette is easily customizable, and if you’re not afraid of a little arithmetic, the pattern notes include instructions for calculating the required yardage for any size and combination of features. But if you think math is no picnic, use one typical skein of fingering weight yarn to get the sizes shown below.
This pattern is especially well suited for hand painted yarns, since the texturing of the fabric breaks up any potential pooling of the colors.
The basketweave pattern is both written and charted.
Picnic Basket Shawlette by Laurie Beardsley
What Is Being Made
The Picnic Basket Shawlette is a versatile knitted shawlette design offered in four distinct variations. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Laurie Beardsley provides a lovely, wearable accessory that combines ease of construction with elegant visual interest. The shawlette is designed to be customizable in size and can be tailored to suit different preferences and yarn quantities.
Design Variations and Shaping Options
This pattern offers flexibility in both body shape and edging style, allowing knitters to create their preferred finished look:
- Asymmetrical Right Triangle: One shaping option that creates a classic triangular silhouette
- Symmetrical Isosceles Triangle: An alternative shape that produces a narrower, more balanced triangle. The isosceles body with chain edging measures 70 inches (177.8 cm) long by 7.5 inches (19 cm) wide, while the isosceles body with ruffled edging measures 58 inches in length
- Ruffled Edging: A decorative finish worked in short rows as you knit, creating texture and dimension along the shawlette's edge
- Crocheted Chain Edging: An alternative finish added after the main body is complete, offering a cleaner, more refined edge treatment
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Picnic Basket Shawlette features a basket weave patterned body as its primary design element. This textured stitch pattern is intentionally simple to learn and quick to knit, making it accessible to beginner-level knitters. The basket weave creates visual interest and fabric texture that effectively breaks up color pooling, making this pattern especially well suited for hand-painted yarns where color variation can be showcased beautifully.
The pattern incorporates short-row shaping for the ruffled edging option, a technique that adds dimension and movement to the finished piece. For knitters choosing the crocheted chain edging, basic crochet chain stitches are required for the finishing step.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for 4-ply fingering weight yarn. One typical skein of fingering weight yarn will produce the sizes shown in the pattern specifications, though the design is easily customizable for different yardage amounts. The pattern notes include detailed instructions for calculating required yardage for any size and combination of features, allowing knitters to work with yarn quantities they have on hand or prefer to use.
Skill Level and Pattern Support
The Picnic Basket Shawlette is classified as a beginner difficulty project, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to shawlette construction. Despite its beginner-friendly status, the pattern includes comprehensive guidance for customization, including arithmetic instructions for calculating yardage needs for custom sizes. This makes it accessible to newer knitters while offering enough depth for those interested in adapting the design to their specifications.
