Product Description

This pattern was donated to the 2011 Tour de Sock competition for charity. It is now also available in wide release. Congratulations to all Tour de Sock knitters!

Like the twisting, turning knots and grooves of tree bark, these socks have got your feet protected for the cooler fall and winter months. The pattern takes its name from one of the many protective bark layers, and you’ll find your own socks just as insulating yet attractive. Worked from the cuff down, these socks feature twisted cables and a symmetrical right and left foot.

If you're comfortable with (or eager to learn!) cabling without a cable needle, this is the kind of pattern that is well suited for this technique. Suggestions included in the pattern notes.

Phellogen Socks by Glenna C

What is Being Made

Phellogen is a downloadable knitted sock pattern designed by independent designer Glenna C. These are cuff-down socks inspired by the natural textures and protective layers of tree bark, offering both insulation and visual appeal for fall and winter wear. The pattern is available in two sizes: Medium (to fit 8–8.5 inches foot/ankle circumference) and Large (to fit 8.75–10.0 inches foot/ankle circumference).

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Phellogen socks are worked in the round from the cuff downward, utilizing classic sock construction methods. The primary stitch used throughout is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, refined fabric ideal for close-fitting legwear. The pattern incorporates cable work as a central design element, drawing visual inspiration from the twisting, turning knots and grooves found in tree bark. Knitters have the flexibility to work cables using either a traditional cable needle or the cable-without-a-cable-needle method, depending on their preference and skill level.

The intermediate difficulty level reflects the combination of techniques required: working in the round, maintaining gauge consistency, and executing cable stitches with precision. Stitch markers are optional but recommended to help track pattern repeats and construction sections.

Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The pattern is designed for a 4-ply fingering weight yarn. The sample shown uses Madelinetosh Tosh Sock, a superwash merino wool blend offering 395 yards (365 meters) per 100-gram skein in the colorway "sequoia." One skein provides sufficient yardage to complete a pair of socks. Alternative 4-ply fingering weight sock yarns of similar yardage are suitable substitutes.

Needles and Notions: Knitters should use 2.5mm needles, with the option to work on either a set of four double-pointed needles or a long 32–40 inch circular needle using the Magic Loop method. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, optional stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, and a cable needle (unless employing the cable-without-a-cable-needle technique).

Gauge

The pattern requires a gauge of 32 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches when worked on 2.5mm needles in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished sock dimensions and ensuring a proper fit around the foot and ankle.
