Product Description

The Peppercorn Shawl is a uniquely shaped shawl designed to sit comfortably on your shoulders without the need for a pin. It is similar to a semicircle, but has a notch in it to fit more easily around your neck. The shawl is slightly more than a half-circle, giving a nice amount of coverage considering the depth.

The design of this shawl was inspired by the yarn - the colorway was so pretty that I knew I wanted to let it shine! Expanding sections of puff stitch lace were just the thing, and when I saw the little pink and gray puffs I was instantly reminded of peppercorns!

This is a great pattern to ease into working with fingering weight yarn. It uses a relatively large hook and works up fairly quickly. The pattern is easy to extend if you’ve got more yardage!

This pattern is featured in the February 2021 issue of Happily Hooked Magazine.

Peppercorn Shawl by Allison Bostrom

What is Being Made

The Peppercorn Shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl designed by Allison Bostrom of Clair de Lune Fiber Art. This intermediate-level project creates a versatile wrap with generous dimensions suitable for layering and everyday wear. The finished shawl features a neck opening of 13 inches (33 cm), a depth of 14 inches (35.5 cm), and an impressive wingspan of 42 inches (107 cm), making it a substantial accessory piece.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs foundational crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The construction begins with foundation half double crochet (fhdc), a method that creates both the foundation chain and first row of stitches simultaneously, eliminating the need for a separate chain base. This technique provides a more flexible and professional edge compared to traditional chain foundations.

The shawl incorporates textural interest through the use of puff stitches, which are specialty stitches that create dimensional, bumpy texture throughout the design. The puff stitch is constructed by repeating yarn overs and loop pulls three times, then drawing yarn through all loops on the hook and closing with a chain stitch, resulting in a distinctive raised bobble effect that gives the shawl its characteristic appearance.

Stitches Used

  • Half double crochet (hdc): The primary stitch forming the foundation and body of the shawl
  • Foundation half double crochet (fhdc): Used to establish the initial edge with integrated foundation
  • Puff stitch: Specialty stitch creating textural dimension and visual interest
  • Chain stitch (ch): Used for spacing and structural elements
  • Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining and finishing

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Peppercorn Shawl is designed for fingering weight yarn, classified as 1-ply in standard yarn weight categories. The pattern calls for 250 to 310 grams of yarn, equivalent to 700 to 850 yards total. The sample shown was created using Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight Superwash merino, a high-quality superwash-treated merino wool specifically engineered for sock and shawl projects. This yarn choice provides excellent stitch definition for showcasing the puff stitch texture while offering the softness and elasticity characteristic of merino fiber.

The recommended hook size is G/4.25mm, or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Crocheters should work to a gauge of 15 half double crochet stitches by 14 rows equaling 4 inches (10 centimeters) to ensure the shawl reaches the intended finished dimensions.

Additional Materials

Beyond yarn and hook, the pattern requires standard finishing supplies including a tape measure for checking dimensions and gauge, scissors for cutting yarn, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and any necessary seaming.
