Following this pattern I have created 2 versions of the penguin, the big and the small one. These are the materials I have used to create both:

Materials for the big penguin:

Similar yarns: Katia Bambi, YarnArt Dolce, Hobbii Baby Snuggle. · Black embroidery thread · 4.5 mm crochet hook · Polyester fiberfill · Yarn needle · Stitch marker · 10 mm black safety eyes

Materials for the small penguin:

Flipi and Flopy the Penguins Crochet Plushies

What Is Being Made

Flipi and Flopy the Penguins is a crochet pattern designed by Diminu that provides instructions for creating two adorable penguin plushies in different sizes. The pattern includes guidance for making both a large penguin and a small penguin version, allowing crafters to choose their preferred finished size. These are stuffed toy projects perfect for decoration, gifts, or collection.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental amigurumi techniques to construct three-dimensional stuffed toys. The penguins are built using standard crochet construction methods, with pieces worked in the round and assembled together. The pattern employs safety eyes for facial features and embroidery details to add character and definition to the finished plushies.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, typical crochet penguin plushies of this style utilize basic crochet stitches including single crochet, which is the foundational stitch for amigurumi construction. The pattern is suitable for intermediate crocheters, suggesting it may incorporate increases, decreases, and shaping techniques to form the penguin's body, head, flippers, and feet.

Materials for the Big Penguin

  • Yarn: Super chunky bulky yarn in velvet or chenille texture. The designer used Himalaya Dolphin Baby (100g/120m, 100% Micro Polyester) in white #80301 and orange #80316, plus Leami Chenille Soft Uni #132 in grey-blue. Similar alternatives include Katia Bambi, YarnArt Dolce, and Hobbii Baby Snuggle
  • Crochet Hook: 4.5 mm
  • Additional Materials: Black embroidery thread, polyester fiberfill for stuffing, yarn needle, stitch marker, and 10 mm black safety eyes

Materials for the Small Penguin

  • Yarn: Sport or DK weight yarn in blue, white, and orange. The designer used Hilaturas LM "Cotton Nature 2.5" (50g/170m). Compatible alternatives include Scheepjes Catona and Katia Panama
  • Crochet Hook: 2 mm
  • Additional Materials: Polyester fiberfill for stuffing, yarn needle, stitch marker, and 4.5 mm black safety eyes

Yarn Weight Considerations

The big penguin utilizes super chunky bulky yarn, which creates a faster, more textured finished piece with a plush appearance. The small penguin uses lighter sport or DK weight yarn with a correspondingly smaller hook size, resulting in finer detail work and a more delicate finished toy. Both versions use polyester-based or cotton yarns suitable for washable plushies.
