Product Description

It is strange how patterns pop into your head when you see a yarn or a color way. That is what happened in this instance. There was no struggling, all the numbers came together easily; and, in the designing process, I only ripped out once, and that was just to change the colors around. (I usually rip out things, MULTIPLE times.)

The shawl is knit from the top down and uses one stitch design that is broken up with rows of stockinette.

I love the colors, but Greenwood Fiberworks has more lovely color combinations to choose from. The yarn is soft and will glide through your fingers easily.

Peek-A-Boo Lace Shawl by Mary Triplett

What is Being Made

The Peek-A-Boo is a top-down knit shawl designed by Mary Triplett. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished shawl measuring 51 inches wide and 17 inches deep, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping. The design features lace elements combined with structured stockinette sections, creating visual interest through the interplay of open and solid stitches.

Knitting Techniques Used

This shawl employs a top-down construction method, which allows knitters to begin at the neck or shoulder area and progressively increase stitches as they work downward toward the finished edge. This approach provides flexibility in sizing and allows for easy customization of the final dimensions. The pattern uses one primary stitch design that is broken up with rows of stockinette stitch, creating a rhythmic visual pattern. The lace elements provide breathability and drape, while the stockinette sections offer structure and definition to the shawl's silhouette.

Stitches and Stitch Details

  • Stockinette Stitch: Forms the foundation and structural elements throughout the shawl, creating smooth, flat fabric sections
  • Lace Stitch: The primary decorative stitch design that repeats throughout the pattern, providing openwork and visual interest

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The pattern calls for Greenwood Fiberworks Simply Sock Bundle in the colorway "Sarah." This yarn is composed of 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon, providing durability and easy care. The bundle contains 100 grams with 463 yards of yardage, classified as 4-ply weight. The yarn is noted for its softness and smooth texture that glides easily through fingers during knitting. The "Sarah" colorway features two distinct colors that can be arranged in any order according to the knitter's preference, allowing for creative customization.

Needles: US #4 circular needle, 32 inches in length, is required for this project. Circular needles are ideal for shawl construction as they accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the shawl grows larger.

Gauge and Finished Measurements

The pattern specifies a gauge of 28 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements of 51 inches wide and 17 inches deep. The finished shawl provides substantial coverage while maintaining a lightweight, elegant drape suitable for various wearing occasions.

Design Notes and Customization

Designer Mary Triplett notes that the yarn colors can be arranged in any preferred order, offering knitters creative control over the final appearance. The "Sarah" colorway includes two colors that Triplett separated and worked alternately throughout the pattern. The designer reports that the pattern came together smoothly during the design process, requiring minimal frogging—only one instance of ripping back to adjust the color arrangement. This efficient design process suggests a well-tested, straightforward pattern suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a manageable project with beautiful results.
