Product Description

This pretty winter jumper was inspired by sweaters from the 1950s and ’60s. It has a high round neckline, and features lacy panels around the top of the body and extending three-quarters of the way down the sleeves. The diamond stitch pattern includes wrapped cluster stitches. Debbie Bliss’s Fine Donegal 4ply yarn has a lovely softness thanks to its cashmere content, and knits up into an attractive tweedy fabric.

Patti Sweater by Sarah Hatton

What is Being Made

The Patti Sweater is a knitted pullover jumper designed by Sarah Hatton, available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This intermediate-level garment is tailored to fit bust sizes ranging from 32 to 46 inches (81 to 117 cm), with a full length of 56 to 62 cm (22 to 24½ inches) depending on size. The sweater features an actual laid-flat width of 34¾ to 48 inches (88 to 122 cm), offering a comfortable fit across multiple size options.

Techniques Used

The Patti Sweater employs several intermediate knitting techniques that add visual interest and texture to the finished garment. The pattern incorporates yarn forward increases (yfwd) and slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over decreases (sl1, k1, psso) to create decorative lace motifs throughout the design. These paired increases and decreases are strategically placed to form symmetrical stitch patterns that run vertically across the fabric. The pattern also utilizes knit two together decreases (k2tog) to shape the garment and maintain stitch counts across pattern repeats. Additionally, the design features cluster stitches, which add dimensional texture and visual complexity to specific sections of the sweater. The combination of these techniques creates an elegant, textured fabric suitable for an intermediate knitter with experience in lace and shaping.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k): The fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl (p): Used on alternate rows to create the reverse stockinette texture
  • Yarn forward (yfwd): Decorative increase creating eyelet holes in lace patterns
  • Knit two together (k2tog): Right-leaning decrease for shaping and pattern work
  • Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (sl1, k1, psso): Left-leaning decrease used symmetrically with yarn forwards to create balanced lace motifs
  • Slip, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over (sl1, k2tog, psso): Double decrease used in pattern repeats
  • Cluster stitches: Textured stitches adding dimensional detail to the design

Materials

The Patti Sweater is designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yet durable yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for the intricate lace and cluster patterns featured in this design. The 4-ply weight allows the decorative increases and decreases to be clearly visible while maintaining the garment's drape and wearability. Appropriate needles for this yarn weight should be selected according to the pattern's gauge requirements, ensuring proper fabric density and finished measurements. The downloadable PDF format provides complete instructions and all necessary information for successful completion of this intermediate knitting project.
