Product Description
In the summer I love to sit on my balcony and knit. Inspired by the climbing Passiflora that instinctively reached out for spaciousness I created this wrap for when you want that little extra space in the back to feel comfortable.
Easy to make, and a lot of fun to knit. Lays perfect on your shoulders. The “body” of this big wrap is worked in the round. Decrease some of your stitches and the next step, the “skirt” is worked back and forth with some fun simple lace increases. No picking up stitches. Then go on for as long as you like, or your yarn last.
My goal with this pattern was to strike that fine balance: calm, meditative knitting, but never boring. As a friend said: “Looks just right for the kind of knitting I seem to have settled into; not too simple, not too fancy, and wearable”.
There is a given yarn percentage used for each part of the pattern, in case you want to use more, less or another yarn than the one the sample is knitted from.
Passiflora Wrap by Lena Strandberg
What is Being Made
The Passiflora wrap is a large, wearable shawl designed to lay perfectly on your shoulders. This knitted wrap combines a structured circular body with an expandable lace skirt section, allowing knitters to customize the final size based on available yarn and personal preference.
Design and Construction Technique
The Passiflora wrap features a thoughtfully balanced construction method that prioritizes both meditative knitting and visual interest. The pattern begins with the main body worked in the round, creating a stable foundation. Strategic decreases transition the knitter into the skirt section, which is then worked back and forth with simple lace increases. This modular approach means the skirt can be extended for as long as desired, giving knitters control over the final dimensions of their wrap.
Designer Lena Strandberg intentionally crafted this pattern to achieve what she describes as calm, meditative knitting that never becomes boring—striking a balance between simplicity and sophistication that results in a genuinely wearable garment.
Stitches and Lace Work
The pattern incorporates simple lace increases throughout the skirt section, creating an elegant openwork effect without overwhelming complexity. The lace elements are approachable for intermediate knitters while maintaining visual interest across the knitting process.
Yarn and Materials
The sample Passiflora wrap is knitted from 375 grams of Wollmeise lace yarn, which provides approximately 2000 meters (2200 yards) of material. Wollmeise lace is a 4-ply lace-weight yarn suitable for creating delicate, flowing garments. The pattern includes yarn percentages for each section, allowing knitters to adapt the design using alternative yarns or adjust quantities based on their needs. A single skein of Wollmeise lace (300 grams, approximately 1575 meters or 1722 yards) will produce a slightly smaller wrap.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Passiflora wrap is accessible to knitters with foundational skills while offering enough complexity to remain engaging throughout the project.
