Each tree has exploded in color-- glowing cinnamon sugar maple, caramel oaks and honey- golden birches. The leaves have just started to drop off the wind shaken branches and drift through the air in dance. Sunlight scatters through the treetops, and golden dots wave and sway across the trail’s entrance. The large park map displays a multitude of trails woven through the woods, some difficult, some easy & relaxed. Each trail holds a different adventure, some crossed with others. The story lived is determined by the trail taken.
ParkTrail Knitted Socks by Alicia Plummer
What is Being Made
ParkTrail is a pair of knitted socks designed by independent designer Alicia Plummer. These socks are sized to fit foot circumferences of 7.75 inches (19.5 cm) in the smaller size or 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) in the larger size, with adjustable foot length to accommodate various leg proportions. The design draws inspiration from autumn woodland scenery, featuring colorwork that evokes the vibrant palette of fall foliage in a park setting.
Techniques Used
ParkTrail employs colorwork knitting techniques to create its nature-inspired pattern. The socks are worked using the two-needle sock knitting method, allowing knitters to choose their preferred style for sock construction. The pattern incorporates stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping, and uses a stitch holder or scrap yarn to manage stitches during construction. Finishing is completed with a darning needle to weave in ends and secure the final details.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric base for the socks. This foundational stitch is worked on the larger needles at the specified gauge. The colorwork pattern is integrated into the stockinette base, allowing the autumn-inspired design to emerge through strategic yarn color changes throughout the sock.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Explorer Knits Rockies DK in 100% superwash merino wool. The smaller size requires 350 yards, while the larger size requires 380 yards from a 274-yard per 100-gram skein.
- Needles: US 4 and US 5 needles in your preferred style for sock knitting (such as double-pointed needles, circular needles, or magic loop method)
- Notions: 3 stitch markers, a stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding stitches, and a darning needle for weaving in ends and finishing
Gauge and Difficulty
ParkTrail is rated as an intermediate difficulty project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic sock construction. The pattern is worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using the larger US 5 needles. The DK weight yarn and intermediate skill level suggest that knitters should be comfortable with colorwork techniques, gauge adjustments, and sock-specific shaping methods.
