What Is Being Made

The Par Sands Twisted Headband is a quick and accessible knitting project designed to create a fitted headband with a twisted construction. This pattern offers two size options: S/M with a 16" to 20" circumference, and L/XL with a 20" to 24" circumference, making it suitable for a range of head sizes. The finished headband measures approximately 4" wide by 18" to 22" long, depending on which size is being worked.

Knitting Techniques

This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques that make it ideal for those new to the craft. The construction involves working with yarn held double, which adds texture and structure to the finished piece. The pattern utilizes a stretchy bind-off method, a technique that prevents the edge from becoming too tight and ensures the headband maintains its elasticity and comfort when worn. The twisted element of the design is achieved through the strategic arrangement of stitches during the knitting process, creating visual interest while remaining simple enough for beginners to execute successfully.

Stitches Used

The Par Sands Twisted Headband pattern relies on basic knit stitches to create its structure. The pattern uses knit stitches (abbreviated as k) combined with decreases worked as knit two stitches together (k2tog). These fundamental stitches are repeated across rows in a straightforward sequence, making the pattern easy to follow and suitable for knitters who are still building their stitch repertoire.

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: The pattern requires 50g of yarn. The example shown uses Totally Turquoise 4 Ply Tweedy held double. The pattern is compatible with both 4 ply and DK (double knit) weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection. When using 4 ply yarn held double, it creates a fabric with appropriate weight and drape for a comfortable headband.

Needles: A 4mm US #6 circular needle is recommended, with the pattern noting that Chiaogoo Shorties work particularly well for this project. Circular needles are ideal for this small circumference project, allowing for smooth, continuous knitting without the need for seaming.

Additional Materials: The pattern requires scissors for cutting yarn and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. These are standard finishing tools in any knitter's toolkit.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 19 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when measured flat in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the headband fits properly. After completion, the headband should be blocked to the specified dimensions of 4" wide by 18" (or 22" for the larger size) long. The pattern recommends firm blocking, with the option to steam block rather than wet block if using acrylic yarn, as this produces flatter, more finished-looking edges.

The Par Sands Twisted Headband pattern is designed by Karen Pimblett of Kernow Designs and is intended for personal use only. Its quick construction time, beginner-appropriate difficulty level, and minimal yardage requirements make it an excellent project for knitters seeking a satisfying, wearable accessory that can be completed relatively quickly.
