Product Description

A simple winding pattern with an extra twist! The thick, warm Paper Bark cowl is named after the twisty tea tree.

The cowl is worked in the round in a tube, with a pattern that winds around and around. The tube is then twisted for an additional swirl before joining into a circle.

The cowl can be made with Worsted weight yarn for a snug indoor/outdoor accessory, or with Aran weight (shown) for a cold-weather go-to that fills the gap between coat and hood.

Make sure to choose yarn that shows excellent stitch definition, so your twisting pattern will stand out.

Paper Bark Cowl by Larissa Brown

What is Being Made

The Paper Bark is a knitted cowl designed by independent designer Larissa Brown. This is a simple, winding pattern cowl that features a distinctive twisted construction, inspired by the appearance of tea tree bark. The finished cowl measures approximately 32 inches (81 cm) in circumference and 7 inches (18 cm) in width, making it a warm, substantial neckwear piece suitable for cold weather.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques to create its characteristic twisted effect. The pattern begins with a provisional cast-on using the one-step crochet hook method, which allows for a seamless join when the cowl is worked in the round. The main construction involves working in the round using circular needles or the magic loop method, with careful attention paid to avoiding twisted stitches during the initial join. Stitch markers are used strategically to identify the beginning of each round, with the pattern recommending either a safety pin or locking marker for this purpose.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

While the PDF content focuses on setup and gauge information, the pattern is described as featuring a simple winding construction that creates the twisted, bark-like texture characteristic of the design. The pattern works at an Aran weight gauge of 16 stitches and 20 rounds per 4 inches, providing the firm gauge necessary for a warm, structured cowl.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn Weight and Yardage: This pattern calls for Aran (Worsted) weight yarn, requiring approximately 275 yards (252 meters) total. The sample shown uses Quince & Co Osprey in the Frost colorway, which is 100% American wool. Two skeins of Osprey (170 yards/155 meters per skein) are required for the project. Osprey's Aran weight classification ensures the finished cowl will be exceptionally warm and dense.

Needles and Tools: The pattern requires a size appropriate for Aran weight yarn to achieve the specified gauge of 16 stitches and 20 rounds per 4 inches. Circular needles or magic loop needles are used for working in the round. A crochet hook in an appropriate size is needed for the provisional cast-on method. Additional tools include stitch markers (safety pins or locking markers) to track the beginning of rounds during construction.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Paper Bark cowl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with circular needles and in-the-round construction. The provisional cast-on technique and round-by-round construction require attention to detail, but the simple winding pattern itself does not involve complex stitch manipulations.
