Palmaria Scarf by Janelle Martin

What is Being Made

The Palmaria Scarf is a knitted accessory designed as a companion piece to the Palmaria Shawl within the Northern Landscapes Collection, part 2. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a long, elegant scarf inspired by the natural waved ridges of seaweed found on the rocky shores at Cape Norman, Newfoundland. The design pays homage to the popular Bias 'Before & After' Scarf by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas, while celebrating Palmaria palmate, commonly known as Dulse, a seaweed native to the northeast Atlantic.

Finished Dimensions

The scarf is available in two finished sizes when blocked. The smaller version measures 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide by 80 inches (203 cm) long tip to tip, while the larger version measures 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide by 102 inches (259 cm) long tip to tip, offering flexibility for different preferences and yarn availability.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern features a slip stitch pattern as the primary design element, creating the distinctive waved texture inspired by seaweed ridges. The pattern incorporates bias stockinette stitch as the foundation stitch, which creates the characteristic diagonal orientation and elegant drape of the finished scarf. The combination of slip stitches and stockinette creates visual interest while maintaining a relatively straightforward construction suitable for intermediate knitters.

Materials and Tools Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for 400 yards (366 meters) for the smaller size or 656 yards (600 meters) for the larger size of fingering weight yarn. The yarn should knit to a gauge of 8 stitches per inch, allowing for proper drape and finished dimensions.

Needles and Notions: Two US #7/4.5 mm circular needles (or the size needed to obtain gauge) are required for this project. Additional tools include a cable needle, tapestry needle, T-pins and blocking wires for finishing, a crochet hook and waste yarn for provisional cast-ons, and glow line tape to mark the current row while following charts and instructions. Optional beading tools are also mentioned for those interested in embellishing their finished scarf.

Gauge and Pattern Specifications

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this pattern. The specified gauge is 37 stitches and 24 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) over bias stockinette stitch when blocked. This gauge measurement ensures the scarf will achieve its intended finished dimensions and proper fabric characteristics.
