Product Description

The Painted Pebbles is an asymmetrical shawl that is designed to let the slub yarn shine. A “slub” is a section in a piece of yarn that is thicker than the rest of the yarn giving it a reminiscent look of painted pebbles or beach pebbles. Using a contrasting yarn with the slub, this shawl is knit in stripes of various depths which really makes the slub pop through. Slub yarn often comes in very colourful choices and paired with a pretty contrasting yarn your shawl becomes a piece of wearable art!!

*knit with 1 skein fingering and 1 skein fingering slub using complimentary colours.

*this shawl is simple and relaxing to knit with no purling.

*achieving gauge is not critical for this shawl but differences may affect the size and yard yardage needed.

*techniques used: knit, yarn over, kfb, kfbf, i-cord edging.

*video links included in the pattern.

Painted Pebbles Shawl by Forest City Knits

What is Being Made

The Painted Pebbles Shawl is a knitted shawl designed by Forest City Knits, an independent designer. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl with specific dimensions detailed in the pattern schematic. The shawl is constructed using a two-color knitting technique that combines a main color with a contrasting color to create visual interest and depth in the finished piece.

Yarn Requirements and Materials

This shawl requires two distinct yarns in complementary colors:

  • Main Colour (MC): Approximately 420 yards (384 meters) of tonal or solid fingering weight yarn, weighing around 113 grams
  • Contrast Colour (CC): Approximately 438 yards (400 meters) of slub fingering weight yarn, weighing around 100 grams

The pattern provides specific yarn recommendations based on successful sample projects. Sample 1 was created using Leo & Roxy 20/80 Sock yarn in the colorway "I'd Rather be Blue" for the main color (96g, 403 yards/369 meters) paired with Full Moon Fibres Moon Rock Slub in the "Imposter" colorway for contrast (81g, 355 yards/325 meters). Sample 2 utilized Artfil Yarns Belle in "Sangria" as the main color (387 yards/354 meters). The use of slub texture in the contrast yarn adds tactile variation to the finished shawl.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Painted Pebbles Shawl is classified as an Advanced Beginner level project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered fundamental skills and are ready to explore more complex stitch patterns and color work.

The pattern employs the following essential knitting techniques and abbreviations:

  • Cast On (CO): The foundation method for creating initial stitches on the needle
  • Knit (k): The basic knit stitch that forms the foundation of the fabric
  • Knit 2 Together (k2tog): A decrease technique that combines two stitches into one, used to shape the shawl
  • Knit into Front and Back (kfb): A single stitch increase that creates one additional stitch by working into both the front and back loops of the same stitch
  • Knit into Front, Back, and Front (kfbf): A double stitch increase that creates two additional stitches from one stitch, worked by knitting into the front, back, and front loops sequentially
  • Color Work: The pattern incorporates both Main Colour (MC) and Contrast Colour (CC) throughout, requiring attention to color changes and pattern placement

The combination of increase stitches (kfb and kfbf) with decrease stitches (k2tog) allows the knitter to shape the shawl while maintaining stitch count in specific sections. The two-color construction creates the "painted pebbles" visual effect that gives this shawl its distinctive name and aesthetic appeal.

Pattern Format

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document that includes a complete schematic showing the finished shawl dimensions, making it easy for knitters to understand the final size and shape before beginning their project.
