The yarn has now been discontined. Any yarn knitting to the tension 21 sts x 30 rows over stocking stitch can be used. Suggested yarn: Scheepjes Softfun knits to the sam e tension and is a similar fibre content. Swatch to check the tension over the pattern. Rico Baby Cotton Soft is a similar fibre content but knits to a slightly different tension: 22/28. Changing needle size could achieve the correct tension.
Oyster Pattern Jumper by Sian Brown
What is Being Made
The Oyster Pattern Jumper is a knitted sweater designed by independent designer Sian Brown. This pullover jumper features a distinctive textured oyster pattern throughout the garment and is available in five sizes ranging from XS to XL, with actual bust measurements from 89 cm (35 inches) to 129 cm (51 inches). The jumper offers a versatile length option, with finished lengths ranging from 58 cm (22¼ inches) to 66 cm (26 inches) depending on size.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several key techniques to create the oyster texture effect. The pattern uses a specialized cluster stitch technique that creates dimensional, shell-like formations across the fabric. The construction begins with a ribbed cast-on edge using smaller needles to create a neat, fitted lower edge before transitioning to the main pattern needles. The garment is worked primarily in stocking stitch as a base, with the oyster pattern stitches worked into this foundation. Shaping is incorporated through strategic increases and decreases to create the fitted silhouette and sleeve cap shaping. The pattern requires careful tension work to ensure the textured stitches sit properly and create the intended visual effect.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – fundamental stitch forming the base structure
- Purl (p) – creates reverse stockinette and contributes to pattern texture
- Stocking stitch – the primary fabric base combining knit and purl rows
- Cluster 5 stitch – the signature oyster pattern stitch that involves slipping five stitches onto the right needle while dropping extra loops, returning them to the left needle, wrapping yarn twice around the needle for each stitch, then knitting and purling into all five stitches together to create the dimensional oyster effect
- Skpo (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) – a left-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Standard increases and decreases – used throughout for garment shaping
Materials and Specifications
The Oyster Pattern Jumper is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn. The pattern specifies Rowan Calmer in shade 461, with yardage requirements varying by size: XS and S sizes require 9 balls of 50 gm each, while M, L, and XL sizes require 10, 10, and 11 balls respectively (each ball is 50 gm). Two pairs of needles are required: size 4.5mm needles for the ribbed edges and size 5mm needles for the main fabric and pattern work.
Tension and Gauge
Achieving the correct tension is essential for this pattern. The specified tension is 21 stitches and 30 rows over a 10 x 10 cm swatch worked in stocking stitch on 5mm needles. When working the oyster pattern itself on 5mm needles, the gauge is 23 stitches and 24 rows over 10 x 10 cm. These tension specifications ensure the garment will achieve the intended finished measurements and allow the oyster pattern stitches to display properly without distortion.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is constructed using a traditional sweater building method. The back piece is begun by casting on stitches with the smaller 4.5mm needles and working a few rows of garter stitch to create a neat edge. The work then transitions to the larger 5mm needles where the main stocking stitch and oyster pattern are established. The pattern instructions include detailed row-by-row guidance with abbreviations for all standard knitting terms, making it accessible to intermediate-level knitters who have experience with basic shaping techniques and textured stitch patterns.
