Product Description
Overmitts, that’s what these are! Here in Michigan no matter how many mittens I knit I always want another layer of protection for my hands in these Midwest winters of ours. Knit with a deep cuff and generous sizing to wear over another pair of mittens these have fun country flair. Embroidery done after the mittens are completed adds a little punch to these big comfy mitts. Knitting them as a mismatched pair just makes them even more fun to wear. I just used a little bit of Wharf for the contrast color on the cuff. Any aran weight yarn would work for this project. Add a bit of embroidery in any free form design of your choosing or leave it off if so desired.
Thanks for looking at my design.

Beyond the Rainforest Country Tweed Overmitts by Phyll Lagerman
What is Being Made
These overmitts are a protective layering piece designed to wear over another pair of mittens, providing extra warmth and insulation during harsh winter conditions. Created by designer Phyll Lagerman, these mittens feature a deep cuff and generous sizing specifically engineered for Michigan winters. The overmitts combine functional design with decorative embroidery details that add visual interest and country charm to the finished garment.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The overmitts are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern employs a set of five pointed needles to create the tubular structure necessary for mittens. Post-completion embroidery adds decorative embellishment and visual punch to the finished pieces, making this a two-stage construction process that combines basic knitting with embroidery work.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
- Make one left (M1L) increases stitches by lifting the strand between needles from front to back and knitting through the lifted loop
- Standard knit and purl stitches form the foundation of the pattern
Materials and Specifications
This pattern calls for Aran weight yarn, which provides the necessary bulk and warmth for layering mittens. The specific yarn used is Berroco Blackstone Tweed, a textured yarn that adds visual interest and durability. The color palette includes 2610 Maple Sugar, 2614 Cranberry Fog, and 2635 Wharf, with approximately one skein each of the primary colors (50 grams, 130 yards per skein) and minimal yardage of the accent color. Knitters will need US 4 pointed needles in a set of five to work the pattern at the specified gauge of 5.5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch. Additional supplies include stitch counter markers and contrasting waste yarn for holding thumb stitches during construction.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, these overmitts are suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction with shaping techniques and embellishment work.
