Product Description
This lovely ponchette/capelet is so beautiful. It is easy and so fast to make. You can wear it over a sleek dress, or pair it up with jeans.
It has a large neckline and which makes it a cool item to wear this summer. I have also added instruction to close in that neckline, but that is optional.
My testers loved the Over Brook Ponchette, and here is a testimonial.
"I wore my ponchette to the senior center and then the grocery store today and boy did I get a lot of compliments! A girlfriend said she wants one for when she takes care of my dog next fall...she wears a medium, so I will be making the smallest size for her. She wants the yarn I used too... the ponchette is a real winner! Thanks!!" Heidi Higginbotham
Heidi used a Mandala yarn, some testers used sugar wheel from Hobby Lobby, and other testers used a simple and soft cotton.

What is Being Made
The Over Brook Ponchette is a lightweight crochet cape or ponchette designed for intermediate-level crocheters. This garment offers a versatile layering piece available in multiple sizes ranging from Small through 5X, making it accessible for various body types and preferences.
Yarn and Materials
This project uses Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend in the colorway "Whipped Cream," a DK weight yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size: approximately 350–375 yards for sizes S–L, 400–425 yards for sizes XL–1X, and 450–500 yards for sizes 2X–5X. The pattern notes that Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend runs on the larger side of weight 3, and testers successfully substituted Caron Simply Soft with positive results. Those using Mandala yarn were advised to swatch and verify gauge before beginning the project.
A J-10/6.0 mm crochet hook is required for this pattern.
Gauge and Swatch Instructions
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished size. The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 double crochet stitches over 4 inches in width and 7 rows over 4 inches in height. To create the recommended swatch, chain 24 stitches, work double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and in each chain across, then chain 3 and turn at the end of each row.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
The Over Brook Ponchette employs several specialized stitches and stitch combinations that create visual interest and texture:
- Shell: Five double crochet stitches worked into a single indicated stitch, creating a fan-like shell motif
- Shell with Ears: A decorative variation combining skip single crochet, double crochet stitches, chain-3 spaces, and single crochet to form a textured element with dimensional "ears"
- TRBL "V": Through-the-back-loop treble crochet stitches separated by chain-2 spaces, creating a V-shaped stitch pattern
- TRBL Fan: A series of five through-the-back-loop treble crochet stitches interspersed with chain-1 spaces, forming an open fan arrangement
- Single Crochet (SC): Basic single crochet stitch used throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet Decrease (SC DEC): A stitch reduction technique that combines two single crochet stitches into one
- Double Crochet (DC): Standard double crochet stitches forming the primary fabric structure
The pattern includes size-specific stitch keys with color coding to guide crocheters through Small–Large, XL–1X, and 2X–3X sizes, ensuring clarity and accuracy during construction.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Over Brook Ponchette requires familiarity with fundamental crochet stitches and the ability to work through stitch combinations and specialty techniques. The use of through-the-back-loop stitches and shell variations adds complexity beyond beginner patterns, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience.
