Product Description

A hat I saw when I was traveling had a townscape going all the way around it. It inspired me to document, in a hat, an homage to places that bring me joy. My husband grew up in a small farming community. When our own kids were young, we bought a home in Vermont which has a lovely, small feel. Here is “Our Town” which is not so much a particular place, but any place that brings the small town feeling home. It has a barn, a pickup truck, flags, hills and trees and of course, homes.

Our Town comes in two Adult sizes: Sm/Med & Large. It is knit in worsted weight* and is a quick knit, not nearly as hard as it may look to do.

*Smaller yarns and needles may be substituted for smaller infant and child sizes.

Our Town Hat by Idle Hands Knits

Project Overview

Our Town is a knitted hat featuring a charming townscape design that wraps around the entire circumference. Inspired by a hat spotted while traveling, this design celebrates the small-town aesthetic through a collection of motifs including barns, pickup trucks, flags, hills, trees, and homes. The hat is an homage to places that evoke warmth and community—whether a small farming village, a New England town, or any location that brings the feeling of home. Available in two adult sizes (Small/Medium and Large), this intermediate-level project works up quickly despite its detailed appearance.

What You'll Create

A knitted hat with an all-over townscape pattern that tells a visual story around the crown. The design elements remain consistent across both size options, with the pattern scaled appropriately for fit. The finished hat combines functional headwear with wearable art, making it suitable for everyday wear or as a meaningful gift.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This project employs stranded colorwork knitting to create the townscape motifs. The design uses a charted pattern that guides color changes throughout the hat's construction. While the finished piece may appear complex, the actual knitting process is straightforward and accessible to intermediate knitters. The pattern includes a stitch chart with modifications made for increased clarity of the design elements.

Yarn and Needle Requirements

  • Yarn Weight: Worsted weight yarn (primary specification)
  • Needle Size: Appropriately sized needles for worsted weight
  • Yarn Substitution Options: The pattern can be adapted using alternative yarn weights with corresponding needle sizes:
    • Fingering weight with size 2 or 3 needles
    • DK weight with size 4 or 5 needles
  • Note: Instructions for downsizing using alternative yarn weights are not included in the pattern; modifications would be made at the crafter's discretion.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this hat is designed for knitters with some experience in colorwork and hat construction. The pattern is described as a quick knit, making it an approachable project despite the detailed townscape design.

Design Details

The townscape motifs include recognizable elements such as barns, pickup trucks, flags, rolling hills, trees, and residential homes. All motifs shown in the pattern remain as originally designed, with chart modifications made solely to enhance pattern clarity rather than alter the visual elements themselves. The design wraps continuously around the hat's circumference, creating a cohesive narrative of small-town charm.
