Product Description
Otago's coastline is cold with winds blowing in from Antarctica, but you will be cosy in this close fit hat with elastic gusset and the matching keyhole scarf.
Sized for everyone from 6 months to the largest adult, please see the schematic for the exact size to knit.
I have suggested a fuzzy sport weight yarn, feel free to substitute a light DK as the yarn I have used "blooms" after washing to fill in the gaps. Check to yardage per 50g to find a similar yarn.
Requirements Hat Ages 6 m (1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 years, S, M, L adult) Head circumference (actual person) 46 (48, 50, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 58, 61) cm 18 (19, 20, 21, 21, 21.5, 22, 22.5, 23, 24.5)"

Otago Hat and Keyhole Scarf Set by JustJussi
What is Being Made
The Otago hat and keyhole scarf set is a coordinating knitwear collection designed by Justine Turner. This downloadable PDF pattern includes both a stretch-and-grow hat and a keyhole scarf, offering size options ranging from 6 months through adult large. The hat features negative ease construction to ensure a secure, comfortable fit across all age groups, while the keyhole scarf provides a practical neckwear solution with its distinctive keyhole opening.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The design incorporates standard knitting construction methods with careful attention to fit across multiple size ranges, from infant to adult proportions.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Otago set employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques including:
- Knit stitch (k) - the basic foundation stitch used throughout the garments
- Garter stitch (garter st) - created by knitting every row, providing a textured, reversible fabric
- Knit two together (k2tog) - a decrease technique used for shaping
- Cast off (bind off) - finishing technique, with options for knitwise or purlwise casting off
- Increases and decreases (inc/dec) - shaping methods to accommodate the multiple size grades
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Just Jussi Softly yarn, a 100% merino fiber in sport weight. The yardage requirements vary by size, with the hat requiring 76 to 160 meters (83 to 175 yards) depending on the selected size. The yarn is supplied in 50g / 1.76 oz balls. The pattern accommodates contrast color options (referenced as CC, cc1, cc2), allowing for creative colorwork and personalization of the finished set.
Pattern Details and Sizing
The Otago set provides ten size options: 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 4 years, 6 years, 8 years, 10 years, small adult, medium adult, and large adult. Head circumference measurements range from 46 to 61 centimeters (18 to 24.5 inches) for the actual wearer, with the hat's negative ease factored into the schematic measurements to ensure proper fit. This comprehensive sizing makes the set an excellent choice for growing children or as gifts across multiple age groups.
