Oscar Baby Mitts by Pure Hand Knits

Project Overview

The Oscar Baby Mitts are adorable cabled aran baby mittens designed to keep little hands cosy and warm. These mittens feature a practical push-on no-thumb design that makes dressing easy and keeps babies happy. The pattern is available in two size options: 0-6 months and 6-12 months, making it suitable for newborns through their first year.

What Is Being Made

These are baby mittens crafted using aran-weight yarn. The mittens feature a decorative cable pattern on the outside, combining both functionality and visual appeal. The no-thumb design eliminates the complexity of thumb shaping while ensuring the mittens stay securely on small hands during dressing and wear.

Construction Techniques

The Oscar Baby Mitts pattern offers flexibility in construction methods, allowing knitters to choose their preferred technique:

  • Worked Flat and Seamed: This method involves knitting the mittens on single-pointed needles and seaming the pieces together after completion, making it ideal for knitters who prefer traditional flat knitting methods.
  • Worked in the Round: Alternatively, knitters can work the mittens in the round using double-pointed needles (DPNs), which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless construction.

Stitches and Cable Pattern

The pattern features a simple and quick cable pattern that decorates the outside of the mittens. This cable work adds visual interest and texture while remaining accessible to intermediate-level knitters. The cable pattern is the primary stitch detail that distinguishes these mittens aesthetically.

Materials Required

To complete the Oscar Baby Mitts, knitters will need aran-weight yarn and the following needles:

  • 1 pair of 4mm (US6) single-pointed needles for the flat and seamed construction method, or 5 x 4mm (US6) double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round
  • 1 pair of 5mm (US8) needles for ribbed cuff work

The use of two needle sizes creates a ribbed cuff that provides elasticity and a comfortable fit around baby wrists, while the larger needles are used for the body of the mittens where the cable pattern is worked.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, these mittens are suitable for knitters with some experience. The cable pattern requires familiarity with cable stitches and basic shaping techniques, making this project an excellent choice for knitters looking to develop their skills beyond beginner projects while working on a quick, satisfying garment.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes all necessary instructions and sizing information. The pattern provides separate pages for different construction methods and sizes, allowing knitters to print only the pages relevant to their chosen technique and baby size.
