Product Description
In the summer I love my garden with all its wonderful color and heavenly smells, the lavender, the Chocolate Cosmos (yes, a flower that smells like chocolate!), Jasmine and most prominently the roses. Roses are beautiful and the ones that smell so heavenly are the ones I love so much. This hat resembles the rose petals around the edges of an open rose. What a wonderful hat to wear in winter to remind me of my summer garden.
Open Rose Knit Hat by Kimberly Gintar
Project Overview
The Open Rose is an intermediate-level knit hat designed by Kimberly Gintar that captures the delicate beauty of garden roses. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a fitted hat with a circumference of approximately 26 cm (10.5 inches) after blocking, designed to stretch and fit head sizes from 19 to 22 inches (43-56 cm). The hat features decorative petal-like details around its edges that mimic the layered petals of an open rose in full bloom, making it a charming accessory for winter wear that evokes memories of summer gardens.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This hat is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The pattern employs either double-pointed needles or the magic loop method on a circular needle, allowing knitters to work in the round to create a seamless, tubular garment. The distinctive rose petal effect is achieved through strategic shaping at the hat's edges, requiring careful attention to stitch placement and increases or decreases that form the characteristic petal silhouette. Blocking after completion helps set the final measurements and enhances the definition of the petal details.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch – The primary stitch used throughout the hat, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance
- Stitch markers – Essential for tracking pattern repeats and maintaining proper stitch placement during the round
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Open Rose hat requires minimal yardage, making it an efficient project for stash busting or trying new yarn colors. The pattern calls for 0.6 skeins of fingering weight yarn, totaling 237 meters or 259.2 yards and weighing 60 grams. The designer used Nicole C. Méndez yarn for the original sample. Two needle sizes are required: US 1 (2.5mm) and US 3 (3.25mm) double-pointed needles or a circular needle measuring at least 40 inches (100 cm) long for magic loop knitting. Additional supplies include 5 stitch markers and a darning needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 24 stitches to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements and ensuring the hat stretches appropriately to fit the intended head size range.
Skill Level and Suitability
Rated as an intermediate project, the Open Rose hat is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping and edge details. The pattern requires understanding of increases, decreases, and working in the round, making it an excellent choice for crafters looking to expand their technique repertoire beyond basic stockinette projects.
