Ollie's Button Hat by JaneTerzzaDesigns
What Is Being Made
Ollie's Button Hat is a knitted hat designed in six sizes to fit from baby through adult head circumferences. The hat features a distinctive ribbed button peak and is available in three construction methods to suit different knitting preferences and skill levels. Actual circumferences range from 11 inches (28 centimeters) for the smallest baby size up to 20 inches (51 centimeters) for the largest adult size.
Construction Methods
This pattern offers flexibility in how the hat is constructed. The three available options are:
- Totally Seamless: Worked entirely in the round on circular needles using the figure eight cast-on method, eliminating the need for seaming
- In the Round: A circular needle construction approach
- Knit Flat: Worked back and forth on straight needles, allowing crafters to choose traditional flat knitting methods
Knitting Techniques Used
The pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The figure eight cast-on is used for seamless construction, creating a secure foundation for in-the-round knitting. The hat incorporates ribbed stitch work, particularly in the button peak detail, which creates vertical columns of texture and helps the hat maintain its shape. The design emphasizes minimal seaming throughout, reflecting the designer's specialization in one-piece knitting construction methods.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches suitable for beginners:
- Knit (k): The fundamental knit stitch
- Purl (p): Used in combination with knit stitches to create ribbed texture
- Knit two together (k2tog): A basic decrease stitch used for shaping
The ribbed button peak is created through alternating knit and purl stitches, a classic technique that produces an elastic, textured fabric ideal for hat construction.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern requires 50 to 100 grams of double knit (DK) weight yarn for the main hat color, with an additional 50 grams of contrasting yarn for accent details. Double knit yarn is a versatile medium weight that works well for hats, providing good stitch definition while remaining lightweight and comfortable to wear.
Needles: The pattern calls for 4mm circular needles long enough for magic loop knitting, or alternatively, 4mm straight needles if knitting flat. The magic loop technique allows crafters to work small circumferences in the round without requiring a full set of double-pointed needles.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches to 4 inches (10 centimeters) and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Achieving correct gauge is essential for ensuring the hat fits properly across all six available sizes. The stitch and row gauge work together to create appropriately proportioned hats from the smallest baby size through to adult dimensions.
Skill Level
Ollie's Button Hat is designed as a beginner-level knitting project. The pattern uses only basic stitches and straightforward construction methods, making it an excellent introduction to hat knitting. The availability of three different construction options allows beginners to choose the method they are most comfortable with, whether they prefer working in the round or knitting flat.
